Logging pic in IMC as a private pilot IR training

Then you can log PIC time. The instructor can always log PIC while providing the instruction and is acting PIC as required pilot in IMC, but you can also log PIC as the sole manipulator of the controls.

Can a non-current instrument pilot file IFR on a VMC flight?

No. You have to be rated and current even to file an IFR flight, no matter the Wx. conditions.

    Practicality of single radio IFR

Replace the KX170 with a MX-170C unit (you'll get the digital flip-flop function at least) or you can just add an MX-170C and have two NacCom radios, plus the GNX-175 and your transponder. Add a skybeacon and you've got ADS-B out. GDL/Stratus for ABS-B In.

    INOP or not INOP?

If the Nav function of the unit cannot be used, then that function of the unit is Inop, whether it is an issue with the unit or the indictor the Nav is functionally INOP. Stick a label (NAV INOP) on it and log it in the airframe log.

Welcome to Bendix-King (AKA The New Narco)

A Cautionary tale... When I started flying, the avionics available were pretty basic in the GA planes I flew in training and after receiving my PPL. I flew BE77 Skippers, C-150s, Piper Warriors and C-172s from the FBOs at KILM (Wilmington, NC). I used ARC/Sperry, Narco, and Collins...

    Impossible Approaches?

Not unless the approach states something like "VOR/DME or GPS RWY27"

    Upcoming Piper Announcement @ SnF

I have a Warrior II, that has a good duration (>5 hours at 8.5 GPH), modest cruise (110-115 KIAS) and good avionics (Garmin 340, 430W, #2 NavCom, and KT74 transponder (ADS-B) out since 2015 (No rebates then). It's a solid plane, relatively easy to own and operate, and a good instrument platform...

    Thoughts on a cracked case

Get a reman. You're spending 18k for the repair and still have an engine with X hours SMOH. Just gat a reman or factory overhaul. It'll cost a little more but will increase the value of your plane.

    GPS straight-in

Ask ATC if you can be cleared "straight in" the activate the leg leading from the course reversal towards the FAF. I've never been told no.

    Garmin pilot filing round robin

Not a huge deal here. File the flight to the last point in the flight and when your done there, just direct-to the departure airport. FLP-select airport-Direct-to-ENT.

    Budget interior, PA28-140 Cherokee?

Airtex is great, but if you want to trim costs, get materials you like and have a lab burn test them to see if the meet FAA specs. If then do, have a car upholstery shop make your covers and cover your existing wall panels with the same stuff as well.

Would you give up ILS for LPV approaches?

$5000 is way, way down. Shooting the ILS at the home base today and the localizer was OOS, GS working fine...working fine yesterday. As long as the satellites are operational, the box works just fine all the way to DA, usually the same or at least close to ILS minimums. Besides, if you're...

    Psychology of fuel management

I use the scheduler function on my 430W to give a fuel change message every 30 minutes. It's a prompt to switch tanks and and keeps you aware of fuel management. Tablet Apps and portable GPS units have similar timers. Other than that, I rarely operate at gross weight, so I generally top off...

    Trig Avionics ??

Got on in my Piper and it has been working flawlessly for almost 5 years. They have a line of NavComs coming soon to the US TSO market. Not soon enough to suit me...so I am replacing my KX155 with a KX125 rather than pay $1750 for a replacement display. BK has all but abandoned their GA...

    iPad Mini

There is a dedicated RAM IPAD mini cradle and in my Piper, I used a standard RAM Ball and short arm. The mini becomes an 8 inch MFD and leave it on the spit map screen with weather on the upper screen and the traffic display on the lower. The larger IPADs are too big for most panels. The mini...

Someone please explain what this pilot was up to.

A circling climb would have been the smartest move, while continuing to fly towards rapidly rising terrain was definitely not.

    Trio vs TruTrak

Garmin is pricing themselves out of the AP game in legacy aircraft. Trio is $3000 vs TT at $5000. Features vs. Price, I'd go for Trio.

    NORDO - Wrong runway

This may or may not offend someone, but NORDO in the 21st century should be defined as "reckless dumb-ass." My base is a very active uncontrolled field, and even with that, as long as everyone listens, makes proper reports, and exercises basic aeronautical courtesy, everyone can usually get...

Logging Flights Reviews and IPC's in IACRA

I can't see a downside, but I'm sure someone will.
