    Some complex time

Abeam the numbers in VMC / pattern flying. A mile or so prior to the final approach fix on an instrument approach.

GTN 650 and a clearance from Santa Monica (KSMO)

You might have created a user waypoint in the 650 corresponding to the expected intercept on V23, but since you were being vectored, it would have been difficult to anticipate and easier (and it did work) just to use the VOR as you did. Good Job.

FNG looking for IFR checkride advice

WAAS is just a method that improves accuracy by comparing calculated GPS positions to known precisely mapped positions and transmitting these correction to WAAS-enabled receivers. RAIM, used in older GPS (including the KLN-94) is an internal self check for accuracy. Occasionally, if the...

How do you CFI's fly from the RH seat?

Nothing wrong with Right-Seat flying. It's a skill that instructors have to master. There is a bit of parallax in viewing instruments, but you learn to accomodate this, and it makes your a better pilot. Becoming a CFI or II, beyond the in-depth oral evaluations, is the ability to fly...

Should All Certified Airplane Default to the Experimental Category After 20 Years?

The biggest advantage a certifed aircraft has, especially for pilot advancement, is the ability to take a checkride in one. That's something that simply can't be done in an experimental aircraft. If every aircraft 20 years old was re-classified as experimental, the cost of flight training...

    One bent controller

When ATC talks, everyone should zip it and listen. Don't miss calls. The CFI should know that too.

Had a bitter experience today with a IR dude

We do opposite direction approaches all the time, but announce and converse with the local traffic. We seldom land and when there is opposity traffic, we'll just sidestep right onto the "downwind". As long as everyone plays nice, announces and shows due consideration, then things always seem...

    KX-155 Refurbishment, Replace??

Get a decent KX125 for a Number 2. They have an LED display and will likely work with your existing indicator. A good chice for #2 if your #1 is GPS/NAV/COM. The display upgrade for a 155 costs as much as a used 155. Face it, Bendix-King has been steadily abandoning it's GA customers for...

How to find cheap flight instruction?

You learn to fly in what you learn to fly in. The 172XP is a good plane, basically a Skyhawk with more horsepower. Lot's people learned in 172's. You can learn to fly in a Multi if you want to. It's not "too" much...you just adopted that mindset. Free yourself and find an instructor to hep...

    Single Nav/Comm in IMC?

Sure, but it's just safer with two radios. I'm fine with a GPS/NAV/COM #1 and NAV/COM #2. If the better unit, generally the GPS does happen to go South, then you still have the #2 NAV/COM (better if it also has glideslope). In addition, most of us are now using an external device such as...
