    Student Pilot fears

I could only find a few in-flight breakups of the 172: 1991-03-16: The pilot of the airplane exceeding the certificated never exceed velocity. The overloading of the wing attachment fittings while maneuvering was a factor in the accident. 2003-01-18: The pilot's inflight loss of control and...

    For the sake of economy

One of the AC units at the house went out this morning, hopefully the service guy won't ask me to help the economy too much.

    Student Pilot fears

For me it's engine failure, I think about it all the time. I just passed 500 hours and I'm on my third airplane; if you figure out a way to stop thinking about let me know. At least you aren't flying a Piper.

    IO VS O

I run my IO lean of peak, which I understand is difficult in some carb engines. *Edit* Bill beat me to it, so what he ^ said.

Top overhaul on high time engine question

I bought a Bonanza over TBO and used my year one budget for going through everything (alternator, gear motor, ELT, exhaust, spark plugs, tires, etc...) and even a full panel redo; I crossed my fingers the engine would cooperate, and so far it has. I think I'd actually feel pretty good about a...

Don't turn down the volume on the radio.

I turned down the volume one time with a passenger after landing. I refueled and forgot to turn it back up. I was holding short of the runway preparing to depart and a plane filled my windshield as he landed. I scan for traffic before entering a runway, but it was certainly a valuable lesson.

    Life-Changing Bands (or Songs)

For most of my life I was obsessed with music, but these days I've found myself not listening to anything at all, particularly on my work commute. At one point I tried switching to podcasts instead of music, but didn't enjoy that either, now it's usually just silence for me. Some of my favorite...

    Finding a hangar

I lucked up and killed two birds with one stone a while back, I bought a plane from someone and was able to just take over the hangar he had it in; I'm still in the same one 8 years later. I'm not sure if that's normal in the world of hangar waiting lists though.

    Helping yourself to fuel.

Saw this on another forum and had to share. Pilot says he and his wife returned to his plane to head home and found an envelope with cash and a note on the glare shield. Apparently another pilot took 10 gallons of fuel from his plane and left double what that would cost. I guess because fuel...

    oil viscosity recommendation

Here's the Aeroshell guidance based on the average ambient outside air temperature, in Fahrenheit, at engine start-up. (SAE40) 80 and W80 = 1.4 to 69.8 (SAE50) 100, W100 and W100 Plus = 60 to 89.6 (SAE60) 120 and W120 = Above 78.8 Info taken from this pdf. Does anyone know the temperature...

    How expensive?

My wife put all her weight on one of the armrests in the rear of the Bonanza and it snapped off just like this. My A&P has found the replacement metal piece on eBay and I'm going to have him fix it at the next oil change.

    Milestone achieved

I just hit 500 PIC hours and to make it sweeter, it was on a vacation flight with my family, which is one of my most enjoyable reasons to fly. Do you get any insurance breaks for milestone hours like 500 or 1000?

What Plane Should I Buy? Triple-Engine Edition

There's the Ford Tri-Motor, there's the Falcon 7x. Are there are a bunch of other three-engine airplane options? *Edit* Yes there are, but not sure if any are reasonable for someone of normal airplane ownership means. Some sort of tri-motor cri-cri?

    Can I mix oil types?

We used Aeroshell 100 for my last oil change, can I utilize Aeroshell 100 Plus without issue if I need to top it off? What about more extreme mixing of oils like brands or weights?
