The Cubs 2 OSH Story: 75 Years in the Making

In the spirit of #EAAtogether and Spirit of Aviation Week, @dembro just released this Piper Cub documentary from back in 2012 celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Piper Cub.

Just Plane Silly on SuperAero LIVE

In case you missed it, last night @dembro hosted @SixPapaCharlie for a livestream of some hangar flying. They talked about memorable aviation and YouTube commenter experiences, good and bad. And POA... uhh... came up, too! Check it out at:

    IFR Weekend Ground School

I'm guessing you fly out of the same airport I do. Want to get together for a discussion and see if there's something I can help with?

The airport 3D view and takeoff/landing info would be nice. But, just not quite worth the added expense to me. Instead, I use Google Earth ahead of time for the 3D view and just manually calculate the takeoff/landing performance for the aircraft I’m flying. (In most cases, I’ve done a “worst...

    Performance Plus? Or Pro Plus?

    ForeFlight

Pro Plus subscription here. Considered Performance Plus, but not enough bang for my buck there. I recommend at least Pro Plus, if for no other reason than the georeferenced plates (taxi diagrams and approach plates). The added situational awareness is worth that level, IMO.

    Are you night current?

I make it a point to not worry about DAY currency. If I'm nearing a currency lapse, I go out at night and do 7-10 takeoffs and landings. I tend to get plenty of daytime takeoffs and landings that I could be day current much longer but, if I'm ALWAYS night current, I don't have to worry about day...

Is it possible to cruise at less than WOT?

In a rental? Nope, not possible at all. ;) In the club plane (where we pay by tach time, not Hobbs, and have ownership of the aircraft and any related maintenance expenses)? I generally cruise at ~65% BHP.

    Accelerated IFR Course

Livingston Aviation in Waterloo, IA. www.livingstonaviation.com Edit to clarify: I highly recommend Livingston Aviation and they handle the DPE scheduling to make sure you're able to take the checkride once training is completed. (I missed the portion of the original post asking if there were...

Any last minute tips for an IFR checkride?

Sorry to hear it didn’t go well, but you’re MUCH better off making mistakes (and learning from them) now than when you’re down to minimums on an approach. Think about what you’ll do differently next time and GO GET IT.

Any last minute tips for an IFR checkride?

It's not morning anymore (Central Time, anyway)... so... how did it go @Collin Kaufman?!

    Notes on KBUU RNAV 29

Also something to keep in mind on that approach, if you're doing it as a practice approach in VMC and not talking to ATC to get vectors: the procedure turn, as depicted, puts you into KENW's airspace. I managed to "teach" @flyingcheesehead that one the hard way.

Tesla Model 3 - Now I get the hype.

That's honestly what I expected to happen in our household. Instead, we take the EV ("my car") on any trips and one of us is "stuck" with the ICE vehicle ("her car") each day (the EV being preferred, but sometimes needed by one or the other). The ICE is old and depreciated enough that we'll be...

Delayed getting check ride, advise needed

I had a checkride scheduled for what turned out to be a bad weather day. I asked the DPE if we get do the oral portion and then discontinue for weather. His response was that he's not allowed to start a checkride without a reasonable chance of completing both the oral and practical portions. (No...

There's an app for that ... isn't there?

Maybe check out Slack or Trello? Slack will let you create different channels. You could have one for oil changes, one for tasks, etc. There's a free version that only keeps history back to 6 months, I think? We use Trello as a task-management app (who is working on what, when is it due, etc)...

Tesla Model 3 - Now I get the hype.

I will admit I was surprised at the road noise. Until I figured out that I'm hearing it because it's not covered by the sound of the engine like every other car I'd driven. Doesn't matter to me if you like the cars or not, but I would offer that many people who DRIVE them end up really liking...

    Any tips on steep turns?

The Commercial ACS requires steep turns to be 50 degrees of bank +/- 5 degrees. https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/acs/media/commercial_airplane_acs.pdf

    Any tips on steep turns?

If you're gaining or losing LOTS of altitude in the turn, you may need to "lock in" the sight picture a little better. Have your instructor demonstrate a turn (or two) in one direction. Try to see where the horizon is on the engine cowling and try to remember that as best you can. Then, give it...
