I always do “the Big Picture” before getting in the plane - looking for things just like tow bars, chocks, big dents you didn’t notice while looking up close, etc. Bummer, but that’s what insurance is for.

I questioned it as well, I suppose it was simply a sign the engine wasn’t making power and rpms dropped, wasn’t paying too much attention to the tach at that point.

And a reminder that in an emergency, ATC, as well meaning as they may be, often knows diddly about flying or operating an aircraft, especially in a real emergency. Being PIC has both responsibilities and consequences.
