    (Long) A failed AI does not mean a failed vacuum pump

    I’ve now had a total of 5 AI failures, no vacuum pump failures (yet). Only the most recent was IMC, local practice flight so I continued on and worked on my partial panel skills. (P.S. - all in different aircraft)

    AOPA Pilot Protection Service. Well worth it. They were the first ones I called. Gave me step by step instructions including phone numbers. Texas DPS troopers couldn’t have been more helpful, gave me a ride back to my car at home base.

    Assuming I understand you correctly to be concluding CFIT, curious exactly how you deduced that as the cause? Based solely on the photos, since the article mentions nothing about cause, couldn’t they just as easily have lost the engine and landed near the ridge top?
