Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

Oh, then I also need 20 solo hours before passengers.

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

10 new hours with a flight instructor even though I already have my complex endorsement (and about 12 hours complex time with instructors) and 7 hours in an arrow. As far as my arrow time they seemed stuck on the fact that my previous time was in an arrow IV, not an arrow (I)...I felt like...

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

I'm down, but I don't think I'll have all these insurance required hours in yet.

How reliable will ATC vector you around thunderstorms?

In my local area, the controllers (Great Lakes Approach) are hypersensitive to what they see on their radar. They will literally suggest vectors around sprinkles. I'm not complaining mind you, just funny sometimes, "I'm showing light precipitation at your 12 o'clock, let us know if you'd like...

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

My brother was with me at the time (a non-pilot). Once we were on the ground, he turned to me and said, "How the hell did you stay so calm?" I responded, "Somebody had to fly the plane." Maybe its from years of working in law enforcement experiencing numerous high stress situations, but I've...

ATC informs me of traffic 500' below me while I am IFR

I've had it happen a couple of times. On two different occasions, I was in IMC / large weather systems, so weather was consistent over a very large area, meaning that I doubt the "VFR" traffic was really VFR. :Sigh: some people....

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

Good news, the strike finder works…it was user error. Helps if you read the manual / know which way to turn the brightness up. Tonight I discovered a few nice surprises in addition to the strike finder report. The nav/comm 2 is a narco and I found it came with a built in dme receiver/display...

    CTAF calls during instrument approach

The real lesson is, the jet guy will report the unsafe condition to the FAA.

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

Thanks. There's a problem with considering the strikefinder antiquated. It still gives you the information INSTANTLY, vs delayed with Foreflight (and good luck figuring out just how delayed that Foreflight information is). Fortunately, I don't need to spend money on an tablet and stratus...

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

I'd like to save it, and it seems simple (basically three parts: the in dash screen, the processor box, and the antenna). But it is old, so old no one even repairs them. And I could buy any one of the three parts used on Ebay and try swapping, but I could end up buying someone elses junk...

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

Thanks everyone. I spent some time last night with an instructor, starting to knock out those insurance required hours. We're going to do some hood time tonight, but last night we just flew it home and tried out everything, making sure it all worked like it should. Only thing that doesn't...

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

$90k. If the market dumps, I'll lower it, but quite frankly, its tough to find an Arrow right now for less that isn't a ragged out clap trap.

Picking up the new-to-me Arrow tonight.

Found an Arrow that checked all the boxes, picking it up tonight. A few observations along with some comparisons with the last plane (Cherokee): --Decent cruise speed, even beating most Arrows. This one is particularly clean and well maintained, with some performance mods, so that may help...

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

It went like this: Tower, "Do you want to declare an emergency?" Me, "No" Tower, "We're going to roll fire trucks, just in case." Me, "ok". That was it. I was on final. Not much more time.

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

I once had a flap motor catch on fire while on a long final at PTK flying a rental 172. After a few seconds of disbelief, I called tower on the radio and told them I had a fire on my wing, most likely from a flap motor (flaps quit working, I noticed the flaps quit working, looked out and saw...

    OSH PICS

I heard it was not a gear up, but a gear collapse. Those old Comanches...

How to choose a flight school?

If I were you, I'd look for one that is lenient on spelling errors.

    I thought I wanted a Mooney...

Not everyone! I can't even say 18...yawn...2, without without almost falling asleep. I don't dislike them. I can't dislike them, because they stir up zero emotion for me. I "nothing" them. They are just so common, so run of the mill, so, just, blah. That's another plane that people seem to...
