    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

He asked for a PIREP on his destination. Nowhere did he ask for anyone to plan his flight. Don't be a jerk.

Outside Magazine article about the IconA5

Yuck. I get that the audience is ignorant, but the Author, being a private pilot, is embellishing.. Granted, I doubt he had any choice.

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

Thanks guys, relieved it's over, but the truth is that it's just started... lots more to it than just passing the PTS as most of you know. Might get some soupy weather here this coming week. Depending on conditions I might go up.

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

I forgot about it ha! One VOR approach partial panel and a circle to land. Took off at 6:30am, it was smoother than glass... Not a single bump. Executed flawlessly and the landing wasn't bad either! Not sure why I couldn't do it Monday but today I was completely relaxed... Unlike before...

    Lost comms question.

FWIW, a friend has a J3 and we could talk to approach at about 10 miles from the airport before coms dropped. Altitude maybe around 2500 feet or so. Edit: J3 with a handheld.

    Helicopter license after PPL?

I would like to take a discovery flight in one. At one time I was very heavy into RC helicopters so I'm at least aware of the basic controls and what they do.

    Ooooohhhh Shiny Shiny!!!

Very pretty! I agree that the W looks way wrong though. I wouldn't be happy about that. Will the pants be painted to match?

    Fizzdo ride-along.

To clarify to the other posters, I already took a ride with an observer. The DPE said something about it prior to the test and didn't really say it was an option, but I didn't object. In hindsight, I might object. I don't think it changed the outcome of the ride, but I do think it was a...

    Fizzdo ride-along.

Who's experienced a FSDO inspector sitting in on a practical test? Oral/ride etc...? Good, bad, ugly? No issue, or something to avoid? Curious about those who have had this experience.

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

It's a requirement for me to get recurring training after failing the ride. There's no hourly requirement. I could go up with him, shoot the approach once, and that would suffice. And yes, I could fly it right now and do just fine. I just don't think my head was clear at the end of the ride...

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

Ha. That was funny. Perspective I guess.

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

Definitely a good comment. If I learned anything about this, if any one facet of the approach isn't right and/or isn't easily and quickly corrected, start over. Might save you from a discontinuance... and save you a little money too:)

    Vacation "Flight Lessons"

I've flown from SNA to Catalina Island. Same situation as you, on vacation. It's an awesome airport. I concur with SkyDog, the distance over the water is not that far, however the approach is tricky and plays games with your eyes. Some rental outfits in SoCal prohibit flight there without a...

    IFR/IMC Flying Video

Hey, I failed mine today. A partial panel VOR approach LMAO! I had the opposite problem, I misread the plate and was too high. You'll get it the next time around.

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

Yeap. I think a few of the little things early on piled up and rattled me. I thought I had recovered as the GPS approach went great and vectors to a VOR approach should be gravy... told the tower this would be a full stop and it would be done... apparently not. The FSDO guy in the back seat...

    Flunky takes IFR checkride..

Boo! Did my IFR checkride today. I was very nervous about the oral portion and not worried about the flight portion. Turns out things happened the opposite way... Oral, breezed through it. One or two questions I needed a hint but the majority of it I had no problem with. I studied a LOT...

    IACRA SNAFU.

Thanks guys, the DPE called me after I started this thread and said the same thing. I jumped the gun, sorry. Mildly stressed haha.

    IACRA SNAFU.

Filled out the 8710 for my instrument. My instructor went in and signed it. Application status is "view/print" and when I view it, my signature isn't in the block. We did a second app thinking we missed something, and there is no place for me to sign. What are we missing?

is your head in the cockpit

You have no clue what you are talking about. The "other than congested area" rule of 500 feet AGL doesn't apply to water nor sparsely populated areas. Over open water he can fly as low as he wants provided he's 500 feet from a boat/person/stricture.
