GPS for IFR flying - do I need it?

The entirety of my IFR training was hand flown, except for perhaps 15 minutes were I used the autopilot once. I know what it's like, and I can do it just fine. If I can reduce my workload single pilot IFR, I'll do it.. and that includes autopilot use. If it breaks, or it's too turbulent...

GPS for IFR flying - do I need it?

Fair enough. I'll take the lesser pilot label and keep my autopilot for extended periods of hard IFR. Being newly rated, I will take all the help I can get when single pilot. Flight planning destinations and alternates revolves around what approaches the aircraft is equipped to shoot. No...

GPS for IFR flying - do I need it?

Which increases workload? No GPS, or no autopilot? It's not about proficiency. It's about not being worn the hell out when it comes time to shoot the approach. Lack of GPS won't keep you from getting there either, and you'll be have mental real estate left over when you do get there.

GPS for IFR flying - do I need it?

Given the choice between autopilot OR an IFR GPS, I'd choose the autopilot. The workload can get high in some phases of flight and having the airpla When I was shopping, there was a nice Cherokee 180 with 200 SMOH, an aspen, a G750, and an autopilot for 60-ish K. Almost an unbelievable...

Check altitudes on LPV and GLS approaches.

Thanks. My post was half-question too haha. I thought I had it down in my head, but the conflicting posts had me second-guessing myself:)

Check altitudes on LPV and GLS approaches.

Doesn't high to low look out below apply to pressure AND temperature? So if it was colder than standard, altimeter will read higher, if it's warmer, it will read lower.

    Rant: 3rd class medical - 8+ weeks

I don't know if the process has changed since mid-2013 but I went for my 3rd class prior to solo and informed the AME of my Sleep Apnea condition. I had the necessary documentation ready, but he still deferred it to OKC, and noted that he asked them to expidite due to an impending solo. I had...

AIM Change - Use of GPS inside the FAF of a conventional approach

Not that I will fly a lot of VOR approaches in the future but I wa doing this during instrument training. VLOC on the #1 head, CDI screen on the 430W.

Check altitudes on LPV and GLS approaches.

Hmm. I'll need to look again. Is that a standard configuration when installing, or an optional thing? I also have a 327.

Check altitudes on LPV and GLS approaches.

I can't speak for other boxes but my 430W manual says nothing about a barometric input for integrity monitoring, unless I am blind.

I also have a handheld radio with headset jack adapters behind the front seat. Though, I don't really consider that a "neat gadget" LOL.

    Short Approach

Short approach isn't nonstandard terminology, I've heard it used many times. I take short approach to mean when on downwind, when you hit abeam the number or thereabouts, chop and drop. As stated previously, basically a very tight pattern. I would not expect it to mean that if I was on a...

    Electronics in the cockpit

Ipad air and iphone 6s+, both loaded with ForeFlight Pro. Both charged from panel power. I use a ram yoke mount for the air, and a ram X-grip mount for the phone with a suction cup(left side of windscreen). Both talk to a Stratus 2S box for ADSB weather/traffic/metars etc as well as backup...

What would you buy: $57k edition

Cherokee 235 or 182 would be a good choice. Cherokee 180/Archer not a bad choice either, sacrifice a little speed but better on fuel. If you want autopilot and a good IFR GPS(and I strongly recommend you buy an airplane equipped with both if you plan to do IFR with any regularity), you're...

    IFR clearance phone number?

I have noticed this too. Oftentimes when doing a simple VFR flight, I'll check NOTAMs and for TFR's on my own and don't need weather information... so it's been a while since I've called them for anything. The last couple flights I did for my IFR ride, I called a briefer and both times they...

If you could replace your piston single engine for free which brand?

In February I replaced my 0360 with... a new 0360:) I'd like to have a PT6 on the Archer but I am thinking many problems would result not the least of which would be cruse speed above Vne.
