Insurance asking CFI for "supervised solo" form after a crash

I have found it best not to sign something that is not true.

It seemed that aviation was very small and most every body worked for their friends at one time. I am not related to M-squared and once asked the owner about the spelling of Breese in the model name of his ultralights and did not receive much of an answer other than it was not related to my father.

I had discourse with the Western Region Surgeon and many cognitive tests for two years in an effort to get a third class medical for a one eyed brain dead pilot. I fly with a statement of demonstrated ability (SODA) and am good for a second class medical although currently I have a third class...

Yes, that was my father. He was a busy test pilot up to 1947 when my sister was born. There were very few aircraft used by the Allies during world war II that he didn't have a hand in. A Breese Monoplane "Aloha" finished second in the Dole Air Race in 1927 and he finished eighth flying a Ryan...

Duncan Keller built the engine for the streamliner Mariah. I went through the lights at 289 mph and crashed about a quarter mile later. The parachutes deployed but did not open up. I was declared dead in Salt Lake City and that is why I took up flying.

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

As a flight instructor I often wonder how a low time pilot can so quickly forget things and make mistakes that they should have learned in their first few hours of instruction. I am surprised how many pilots can’t do weight and balance and performance calculations during their flight review...

Premier 1 driver reported to FAA by "pilot"

My personal experience is with flying a Boeing-Stearman Model 75 with very restricted forward visibility on approach that gets worse during the round out. I have a friend who flies a North American P-6 Texan who has a challenge with forward visibility on short final. I have a friend who flies...

Premier 1 driver reported to FAA by "pilot"

It is my observation that there are many aircraft with restricted forward visibility on short final and it is nice for them to know when aircraft are leaving the runway and where. All the radio calls listed in the AIM for non-towered airports appear to have value to me so I make them.

Premier 1 driver reported to FAA by "pilot"

Because the AIM recommends it. AIM Table 4-1-1 Summary of recommended radio communications for No Tower, FSS or UNICOM 10 miles out. Entering downwind, base, and final. Leaving the runway.

Windy & Challenging Short Field Takeoff

In my opinion that was poor aviation decision making. With a little bad luck I feel the flight would have ended badly. Given the location of the hill there may have been rotors coming off of them making takeoff to the POH numbers unlikely. I would have waited for better conditions or left...

    Gyroplane on the brain

There is not solo time for a Sport Pilot add on endorsement and no knowledge test. The proficiency check ride may be given by another CFI. There are no minimum dual hours. Just learn to fly to practical test standards and learn something about rotary wing aerodynamics.

    Finger (123.4) and Fingers (123.45)

Having participated in radar flight tests where timing and precise location are everything I can understand Jim’s frustration. My mother maintained that telling others how to behave or telling them they had bad manners was a demonstration of very bad manners. I have learned when people accuse...

wonder who pays for his tires

I feel this is a wonderful example of a flight instructor talking too much without communicating anything and setting a bad example. Thank you for the lesson.

    Talk me into CFI

In my experience difficult things have more value. Improving my skills to pass the CFI check ride made me a better pilot. I learn from every client and every training flight. I find value in that. I failed my first CFI oral.

Thinking about - err bought - a Moto Guzzi V7 Racer

I raced a Moto Guzzi Lemans for Euromart corporation (the west coast distributor) 77,78 and 79. I returned it with the original paint and finished first in the state once and second behind another MotoGuzzi twice in open production. The one you have manages the shaft drive much better than...
