    Lost comms procedure after takeoff

I have been told by my local class D ATC that lost coms is considered an emergency. Squawk 7600, return to the airport and wait for light gun signals. If you lost coms because of low voltage you will likely lose your transponder too so be aware that your return may be a surprise.

    Traumatic Brain Injury

In my opinion my involvement with aviation has helped me more than any thing ese in my life to quantify and manage the results of brain injury. Many of the effects are subtle; some less subtle.

    Traumatic Brain Injury

My neurologist felt the FAA did not quantify what they were looking for well and I ended up taking two complete tests and several abbreviated tests. Perhaps they have gotten better. I learned a lot about the effects of a TBI and it gave me some tools to deal with it. If you don’t have any...

    Traumatic Brain Injury

Good luck on you aviation adventure. I feel there is an advantage with going to an AME who is an advocate. I was fortunate to know Bob Hoover from childhood through my test pilot father and he encouraged me to just keep plugging away and don’t get caught up in the setbacks. Bob had his own...

    Traumatic Brain Injury

I had a motorcycle accident at Bonneville in 1994 that resulted in a TBI with loss of consciousness and lost the sight in my left eye. I was actually declared dead. In my exit interview at the hospital I was told I would never stand unassisted, speak in complete sentences or perform any...

Depending on the client I find value in covering the instruments. It forces them to look outside.

    CFI endorsement ?

When I extend a solo endorsement that I didn’t initiate I feel based on FAR 61.195 I need to see him fly and demonstrate knowledge to my solo standards. I have a look at his log books and see if he has the cross country sign offs that are required for his recent flying. I don’t want my name in...

The most difficult thing I have to do when providing flight instruction....

The most difficult thing I have to do when providing flight instruction is to recognize and identify when the learner understand intellectually and yet clings to a misunderstanding deep in their heart. I feel that panic often brings the misunderstanding to the surface and may cause the...

Proof an airplane is a male?

I refer to my aircraft as She. She is high maintenance, temperamental and often does things contrary to my commands. As she ages she has become more high maintenance, more temperamental and more demanding of my attention.

CFI's thoughts after one of thier studets has an accident?

I called my client up when his aircraft appeared on the ASIAS report. Before I could start asking questions he said that he had done three things I had told him not to do and explained exactly what had happened and why. I was pleased that he remembered what I had taught him and frustrated that...

    Never Ever Ever Again

In my opinion landing when you don’t know which way the wind blows is a bad idea. I feel that is what windsocks are for. In my opinion imagining others will make correct radio calls and people will hear your radio calls accurately is an unreasonable fantasy. I have not found a way to know...

    Entering the pattern towered airport

What else would you expect to hear Trigdor? It is possible they want you to make right traffic because of other traffic. If you say “unable” because you are not comfortable with ATC’s instructions ATC will come up with a different plan. ATC may be dealing with aircraft with conflicting flight...

Cessna Centurion crashes on approach to Lubbock, TX | Icing Conditions

I declared a mayday once when my engine stopped on an extended down wind and there was no follow up from the FAA beyond a polite telephone call. Declaring an emergency allowed ATC to cancel a takeoff clearance and clear me to land anywhere on airport property. The fire department thanked me...
