Whats the longest you've left your plane in a transient parking space?

Might consider asking someone on this Board to go take a look at her from time to time. I am fairly certain there are members close by. I know some forums have a process where you can sign up for supporting stranded pilots ranging from overnight stays to providing local transportation. I don’t...

Low time pilot insuring a retract?

Luke 14:28-30. It almost applied to me when building my current house. By the time we were out of the ground, I was a $150K over budget. Yessir, thought it was a mighty fine looking basement and nearly left it that way. My neighbors have for almost 20 years.

The Role of General Aviation Airports in Firefighting

KCOE has quite a fire fighting fleet based here. There are about 15 of turbine powered amphibians plus an assortment of helicopters, etc. When it gets real busy during the fire season, they will sometimes put up a temporary control tower which catches a lot of locals by surprise.

Annual expenses as a plane owner

I use $12K per year as a budget number for a fixed gear, fixed pitch prop that is in excellent shape. That would include a minor stuff like a battery or ELT going gunny sack which you can absorb by buying less gas, etc. If your plane is not in excellent condition, then it can be a crap shoot...

Where’s everybody relocating this aircraft too that is in the path of the storm? How far away is “safe”?

Home Depot can kiss my big orange ....

If I have to choose, I prefer Lowe’s. They easily give a 10% discount to veterans and never a hassle. Not so with HD. I used to have to carry in my original DD-214 to HD in order for them to give me the discount. They refused to accept a scanned copy. My wife prefers the local Ace and honestly...

    Cascades WA flight

Maybe he should show the “other” Washington. You know, on the “right“ side of the Cascades where there is desert, sagebrush and sand until you get to Spokane. And stay away from Lake Chelan - enough West Siders there already.

    Insurance increase? Anybody else?

A much debated topic. AOPA, In the Hangar, and other aviation “shows” have done episodes on the rise of insurance and in some cases, really tremendous increases. The conventional wisdom is there are a couple of factors at play: (1) a significant amount of claims from natural events such as...

PPL Written...how much time did you give yourself to study?

I probably studied a day before I took the exam just to review some of the earlier material, some of the calculations, etc. I think I was in the high 90’s on the practice exams and I took the exam within 2 weeks of completing ground school and being signed off to take the written. IIRC, I think...

    Pandemic flying

Like so many, lots of free time, but no real place to go since almost all fly-ins have been cancelled in the PNW, restaurants and museums are closed, etc., and now the fires have started meaning IFR days ahead due to the smoke and haze. I have pretty much written off 2020 for almost everything.

    100 years of Air Mail

It is a great museum. They have an annual fly-in that is pretty cool that I have been to several times. It does attract lots of plane - some 300-400. Unfortunately no fly-in this year because of Covid.

Anybody ever fly into KJSY (Joseph, OR)?

I’ve flow in there several times for fly-ins. Great place to fly into. I would suggest you get familiar with mountain flying techniques since that is somewhat difficult terrain around there. Know your density altitude calculations and how to lean. Not sure about camping under wing. There is an...

The funny stuff us A&Ps find

I remember as a young JAG captain working with a friend who was assigned as the legal advisor to a fatality investigation of 6 deaths of airborne paratroopers of the 82d Airborne who died on a jump in California at Ft Irwin in 1982 (Operation Gallant Eagle). I would later be a legal advisor on...

Quick/Easy Aviation weather website or app?

I use Windy, 1-800, the Aviation Weather Center and as mentioned their GFA tool plus weather in Garmin Pilot before I launch. I also have My Radar and Aero Weather as apps. And yep despite all of those resources, I still get surprised from time to time.

So how do you handle a situation like this?

Actually happened near me last year. Fortunately, the pilot was able to land on Highway 97 and with the help of the local neighbors were able to push the BONANZA off into a driveway thus unblocking the highway. He was able to get a local A&P to look at it and then next day, the Kootenai County...
