How much toilet paper do you need?

How in the hell do you put a dozen 30-packs of TP in an ordinary car, or even an SUV? Maybe in a pickup? It's still stupid beyond belief to hoard an item for which there is no logical reason to expect a shortage, EXCEPT if everyone does exactly what you are doing. People behaving like chimpanzees.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Thanks. Sounds like the garage should be able to do this fairly cheaply then.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Did you miss the winky? ;) Yeah, I know it's indirect, and that some decisions are based on keeping stress levels down when possible. Some just don't make a lot of sense.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

If lack of alcohol will cause riots, then we are doomed as a species. ;) The only point I would argue with you on is whether cars are needed for getting food. There are a lot of people around here that do not drive and rely on bus service to get to the grocery store. That fact is exactly why I...

Coronavirus hysteria is hurting every one.

Good question, and I don't know the answer.

Coronavirus hysteria is hurting every one.

Correct. People are starting to realize that younger folks are only statistically better off. There is still a significant chance of getting a severe case even if you're under 50.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Good for you, I like your Dad. Mine was super protective of his little girl. Taking that literally, neither have I. But I don't do my own repairs. According to the dealership, in the Sonic the compressor is a single unit. The only permanent fix is to replace it. Since I never use it (and in...

Yeah, they're only worried about people being in close contact with each other, not with pets, even other people's pets...

Quick review of exponential gain re health issues

Yep. I did an exponential fit to the data here in VT through yesterday. The fit isn't great because the sample is relatively small (49 cases as of yesterday), but the doubling time came out to 2.4 days, so very consistent with the national trend.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Yes. My only point was that the criteria for what is essential aren't as simple as "what is needed for day-to-day living". People do eventually need haircuts, they're part of daily life. But they are banned because they involve non-ESSENTIAL person-to-person contact. I would expect anywhere...

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Agreed, that might be difficult unless you are eligible for renewal by mail. I'm pretty sure the DMV office here is going to be closed to the public. But they are likely to extend expiration dates for driver's licenses - at least ordinary operator licenses, not sure about commercial.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Here in VT, it looks like everywhere where you can't assure a ski-length of distance between people is going to be ordered closed. It already includes hair and nail salons and barber shops. I wouldn't bet that laundromats will even stay open, though the pushback against that would be mammoth.

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

The garage it's at now MIGHT be able to jury-rig or order a belt to bypass the compressor. I discussed that with the tow truck driver (a mechanic) and he agreed that could be possible. Not sure how stable that would be long term of course. But I certainly don't have the mechanical skill to do it...

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

I'm not sure what type of car you have, but in a Chevy Sonic that's not an option. I don't even use my A/C at all (this is Vermont, after all), but the same belt that drives the A/C compressor also drives lots of other things. Because the seizure happened on engine start, it would take a lot...

Wondering if I will beat the lockdown

Yesterday I had to have my car towed to a local garage after it failed to start outside a Montpelier laundromat. Though it looked like a failed starter, the likelier cause is seizure of the A/C compressor clutch bearing. The symptom for the last month has been a loud chatter under the hood for a...

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

That's very true. My current university has a very active study abroad program, summer programs, not to mention the extracurricular activities that take place on campus, such as athletics and military training (it's a military college). Which all supports my contention that online learning is no...

    Coronavirus... a positive story...

Disorderly conduct I get, but "perpetrating a hoax in a public building"? How many jurisdictions have a law specifically prohibiting that? And a felony no less? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they were able to charge him with something, it just sounds like one of those laws that might exist in...
