    CRB ice detector... worth It?

Dan, you seem to be one of the more knowledgeable posters here so perhaps you can explain something on the carb ice chart that has always bothered me: Why are pressure carbs susceptible to icing at 80% RH but not 100%?

Engine sort of runs with mags off....

I've had a couple of auto engines that would diesel occasionally. Air-cooled engines are likely to be worse since they run hotter. IIRC, air cooled Volkswagens since 1960 all had a solenoid valve to shut down the idle circuit to prevent this. I suspect this is one reason we are taught to shut...

    GO-300-D free play

The GO-300 is not the only geared engine out there. Perhaps there is a comparable unit (six cylinder, spur gears) that has a published backlash spec and could be used as guidance for the GO-300. Not as good as the real thing of course, but perhaps better than nothing? Also, what about the...

    Corona Virus Challenge

Overreaction. Many think that toilet seats, especially public ones are filthy, when in fact there are many filthier items in the typical house: https://www.thehealthy.com/home/germs-toilet-seat/

    Audio line level and GoPro

Since the go-pro is a consumer device I would try the -10 mixer output level and see how it works out. As for the mic, I am a bit confused. I would think you are connecting it to the mic input of the mixer, not a line input. In this case the line input level is irrelevant.

    Audio line level and GoPro

"+4" means that when the VU meter shows "0" the audio level is 4 milliwatts into a 600 ohm load. It is a "professional" standard. "-10" means that when the VU meter shows "0" the audio level is 10dB below 1 volt, or 316mV. This is a "prosumer" or "consumer" standard. Usually if a device's...

Reverse Jack To Pull Tail Down

Here's a John Deere model A head, obviously for two cylinders: Bore was 5.5" so you can estimate the size from that. I presume you mean grain elevator. I can hardly imagine a hotel elevator running on a hit-and-miss engine!

Reverse Jack To Pull Tail Down

Single cylinder? I thought they were mostly two cylinder until 1960 or so when they went to 4/6. What model was the single?

    Electronic/engine noise coming through headset

Many intercoms have a music input which is reduced in volume whenever the mic is active. Do you have anything connected to the music input?

    Shutting down NDBs

It's a bit more complex than that...the "expanded band" (1610 to 1700kHz) is limited to 10kW.

    Shutting down NDBs

AM stations can be used as a makeshift NDB, at least for VFR use. Many years ago (before I had GPS) I wanted to stop at a rural airport on a long trip to get cheap fuel. No VORs or NDBs within 40 miles. So I found an AM station located in the nearby town using the FCC database and marked its...

    Shutting down NDBs

WLW was 500kW only from 1934-1939. It is a "clear channel" and now has 50kW day and night. There are several non-clear-channels with 50kW day and night. For example KMJ in Fresno, KBOI in Boise.

Clearing ice from in front of hangar

Fertilizer also works as an ice melter and does less damage to metal and vegetation than salt type products. More expensive though.

Retirement: inside or outside the USA?

Put that way the U.S. does not seem that "free". However if you look at the 2019 data you will see the top rated New Zealand has a score of 8.88 while U.S. has 8.46. Not such a big difference. By comparison, most of the Middle East countries are around 4 or 5.

Do You Carry a Spare Tire and Tube All the Time?

Carrying a spare tire and tube seems like way overkill. Most planes have different sizes for mains and nose/tail so you would need two tires and two tubes. If I ever get a flat away from home and a new tube is not readily available I would patch it with supplies available from the aviation...

Airplane engines vs farm tractor engines

IIRC my late FIL's Ford 8N was like that, with the throttle (or actually governor) mounted on the steering column. Model T was the same way. I've also driven more recent vehicles (1950 Chevrolet truck and 1970 Datsun roadster) which had hand throttles (in addition to the foot throttle)...

Why I No Longer Fly Lean of Peak For Now

No, modern car engines with electronic fuel injection strive to maintain stoichiometric A/F ratio. This is the same as peak EGT. It allows a modern 3-way catalyst to work. ROP and the CO/HC goes up. LOP and the NOx goes up.
