[NA] Residential HVAC - can 'system' SEER be higher than component SEER?

Actually the ton unit made perfect sense long ago. Before mechanical air conditioning was practical, some rich people would cool their house with ice, much like the "ice box" used to keep food cool. The tons of ice used per day was a convenient measure. For calculations, multiply the ton...

[NA] Residential HVAC - can 'system' SEER be higher than component SEER?

System efficiency is affected by indoor and outdoor coil size; the larger the coil(s) the more efficient the system. Your new outdoor unit is rated when used with a particular size indoor coil. If your indoor coil is larger than this, it will be more efficient.

Anybody with any experience on a Suzuki Boulevard S40?

The S40 has a balance shaft so the vibration is not as bad as you might first think. There is a U-Tube series "Doodle on a Motorcyle" which features a young lady and an S40 in the earlier episodes.

A-65 lost prime to oil gauge

OK, sounds like OP's problem is the oil pump losing its prime, not the gauge of which I think we agree losing prime is impossible. However this does not change the fact that the OP's A&P's advice is awful: start the engine and run it until oil is visible and making a mess in the cockpit. This...

A-65 lost prime to oil gauge

Some have a misconception that the line to a pressure gauge must be full of whatever fluid it is measuring. This is absolute bunk. Pressure is pressure whether transmitted by air, water or oil. Your A&P either has this misconception or he is playing a joke on you. Has he ever asked you to...

GTN 650 - radio needs service?

Not a 650 expert by any means, but I'd guess the internal micro-computer is FUBAR . Agree that CB failure is not likely but OTOH this is an easy thing to check. Put the voltmeter probe on the wire harness ring terminal, NOT the CB terminal or screw so you are checking for poor terminal...

Spark plug gaskets - replace or not?

^^^^^This^^^^^ I'll vote for the flat side toward the head because the head is soft aluminum and flat. The steel plug can deform the copper washer to fit.

I like to fly first time passengers over their residence; this usually interests them.

    Starter question

Balderdash! If you'd read and understood the data sheet you would realize the 0.2 ohms is full scale on the lowest range. Resolution is 100 micro-ohms, or 10 times as good as your meter at work. 200 amps and 100 micro-ohms is a voltage drop of 0.02 volts so this meter would be quite...

    Starter question

No sweat with a "4 wire" ohmmeter. Not cheap though, about $500 and up. Here's an example: https://www.newark.com/b-k-precision/310/digital-milli-ohmmeter-4-wire/dp/54M5383

    Starter question

To determine the cranking speed you could crank for say 10 seconds (at idle cutoff) and count the number of blades. Then calculate the speed using the formula: (6)*(# of blades counted)/(2 or 3 depending on prop). For example if you counted 20 blades and have a 2-blade prop it would be 60 rpm...

SU Carbs - ever had them?

'69 MG Midget with HS2s and '63 Triumph TR4 with H6s. I've heard the HD8 is as close to a "universal" carburetor as you can find: one of these will make almost any gasoline engine run reasonably well. The variable venturi ensures that the carb will never be too big like a conventional fixed...

Guess as to Origin of Metal Found in Oil Screen

Doesn't look like a normal O-300 piston to me. Mine have three compression rings and one oil control ring which is located near the bottom of the skirt. Pictures in OH manual look similar.

    [NA] Battery Longevity

I guess auto mechanics did not get the word on that. They typically charge batteries in the vehicle, and often near electrical machinery and combustion heaters. Oh, the humanity!

Differential pressure (leak down) tester air requirement, compressor?

Not to be confused with Harley Owners Group? Here's a heavy duty 12V compressor but the price...ouch! https://www.ebay.com/itm/OASIS-Air-Compressor-Continuous-Duty-12VDC-XD4000-12-/252988339672?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10#viTabs_0 Seriously, a typical 12V compressor will not have near...

Differential pressure (leak down) tester air requirement, compressor?

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-gallon-portable-air-compressor/p-00915362000P I've used this one for several years and have been happy with it. Small enough to not trip the breaker (as long as I throttle back my 1000W worklamp) but large enough for a leakdown test. Oil lubrication is more...

    Ah, car electrical problems

Measure the parasitic drain with an ammeter. Make sure the door, trunk, and underhood lights are all off. On modern cars you need to wait as much as 45 minutes for all modules to go to sleep. 50mA is a reasonable limit in the absence of specific manufacturer's data.

    Gas...how low can it go?

The average tax on auto gasoline is about 56 cents per gallon although this varies considerably by state. Obviously the price will not go below this unless politicians reduce the taxes LOL. Here in SE Michigan the lowest I've seen so far is $1.59.
