First time in IMC with Dynon HDX for Certified

Nice one. I've flown that exact route before as well. I wonder when/if they are gonna create an RNAV circling approach there. I do the same as you, however, and fly the GPS and dial in the VOR on NAV 2 for monitoring. For me personally, the more I fly IMC, the more comfortable I am with it.

    Toilet Paper

So YOU were that creepy guy I saw standing in the corner the other day.

    Mooney down in newhall

I'm actually working on that exact thing. Similar to how I made a YT video re-creating the Kobe flight path, I'm in the process of going over the data and matching the flight path and audio together. I fly thru the Newhall pass all the time as this crash happened very close to my home airport...

    GoPro advice

If buying used, don't get anything older than a GP6 because of the image stabilization benefits. GP7 is better. If you can swing it, get the 8. For recording cockpit audio, the simplest solution is to get something like this: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/gopro11-14862.php...

Why you need a good carbon monoxide detector

I really like the panel-mounted option. Always in your FOV. Are there any time sensitive components? It seems the portables need replacing every couple years.

I have to agree. I flew a Cardinal for 8 years and always thought it was a sleek looking airframe, especially compared to most other cessnas. That said, I’ll take a low-wing almost any day.

    Mooney down in newhall

Your experience is a good insight to a possible explanation. I looked at his flight history and there were only 9 flights in the past 3 months, and they all looked VFR. Yesterday was a solid IFR day around here in SoCal. Perhaps he just wasn’t proficient. I finally got recurrent last weekend...

    Mooney down in newhall

I listened to the audio and my interpretation was that the sloppy readbacks near the end were probably due to task saturation. He was obviously having issues with tracking the localizer, for whatever reason. I think the plane just got ahead of him.

    Corona Virus and Oshkosh?

Swine flu lasted 1.5 years. We are only in month 3 of this.

Sun N Fun 'postponed until May 5-10"

I think early May is a wee bit optimistic

Not to mention all the communities the infected bikers return to.

    Corona Virus and Oshkosh?

I'm surprised Sun n Fun hasn't pulled the plug yet. I'm guessing that happens within the next week. It's irresponsible not to do so. New York state is cancelling crowds of over 500 people. Sun n Fun is what....200k?

    mid-air collision... avoided

The more you fly in SoCal airspace, you will experience this occasionally. That's what makes ADSB traffic so valuable. Looks like everything worked as it should Both planes seemed to see and avoid!

OP, If your main goal is specifically to fly to Mammoth or Big Bear to visit your cabin every other weekend with passengers and bags, I would say DON'T consider a Tiger. I would be looking for more horsepower and/or a turbo. But my impression is that you are in the honeymoon phase and thinking...

RV10 is gonna be at least double what a good TIger costs if you can even find one for sale. They are quite rare to come by and I'm fairly certain the OP doesn't want to spend 3 years building one. That said, they are sweeeet. If I was gonna go down the plane building route, I'd get a Sling TSi.

Another "What plane to buy" thread

I'm obviously a little biased, but a Tiger sounds like an excellent plane for your mission. 130 kts all day long, 8.5-9 gal/hour, 600 lbs payload for 4.5 hours with full fuel (with reserve). Fun to fly. Relatively simple mechanically. Back seats easily fold down for awesome storage capabilities...

Top 6 small airports in Southern California

Congrats on the upcoming solo! It's a great feeling. The solo cross countries are even better. As far as routing goes, I've gone both ways. I think the central valley route is a little shorter for me, but sometimes other aspects play a role. If the central valley is LIFR, I've gone the desert...

Santa Paula is definitely a great airport. It's always my go-to for cheap fuel. Great community for sure.

Top 6 small airports in Southern California

Columbia is awesome! Camping there is on my to do list. I didn’t include it b/c it’s not Southern California otherwise it would be a strong contender.
