    What's your shortest flight?

Time wise it's a tie between Appleton to Greenbay and Travis AFB to McClellen, at about 12 minutes. Distance it's about 300 yards, from one side of the Akwe River to the other, up by Yakutat, Alaska.

There is a reason airlines require "sterile cockpit" procedures below 10,000 feet. Nothing not related to the flight is done or discussed below ten.

An Experiment: I'll Post My Mistakes Per Flight

My FO made the mistake of neglecting to start the APU taxiing in, I made the bigger mistake of not catching it before shutting down the third engine.

Used planes the good the bad and the ugly

Mags only have 200 hours on them, exhaust, alternator and starter are fine so are being re-installed. I put on a new carb, but mainly because the original is 50 years old and it just seemed like the right thing to do. If you add up the other things, not related to the engine, the price is...

    Young pilots

I while back I had an FO that was very young looking, he was always taking crap from mechanics about looking too young to fly. I was a very young looking Marine Corps pilot many years ago and recall the same comment from a Navy Chief, my response "I'm old enough for you to salute an officer."...

What plane are you daydreaming about today?

The nose wheel brake proved to be ineffective and was removed, the idea was to increase stopping power. We used a motorcycle hand brake on the flap handle. The original Mighty Mouse was a 1965 150E. Thor and I "borrowed it" one time and flew it up to the San Juan Islands. We didn't count on...

What plane are you daydreaming about today?

It is fun to fly, that's the Mighty Mouse (N12MM), built by Lynn Emrich in the late 1970s for short takeoff and landings. I flew it back in 1978-79 towing gliders at the old Issaquah Glider Center. When I was flying it the electrical system and anything else not required had been removed. It had...

    Critique my Alaska/Canada survival kit

Consider inflatable floation/survival vests for all occupants. You will be flying over a lot of water if you go up the coastal route. Make sure that any vest is manual inflate only, not water activated. I will be flying the coast route in a couple of months myself and will have floatation...

    taxiing around the big iron

We are told that there can be 100+ knot jet blast 300-500 or more feet behind us. With breakaway thrust (thrust to start the airplane moving from a stopped position) it can be dangerous 600-900 feet behind us. That is from an MD-11, a B-747, B-767 or any similar sized airplane would be about the...
