    Bought a hangar today

It takes me about 55 minutes to get to PANC. Fortunately it is only once or maybe twice a month. Taxes are eye watering, but that’s the way it is.

I talked with Steve Knopp a couple of years ago about Pponking the engine in my Cessna 180. He basically talked me out of it. Fuel burn is going to be slightly more than in a 185 with an IO-520, in other words around 15-17 GPH. I've known Steve for more than 30 years and he is a stand up...

    Dangerous jobs

More importantly, it allows the Captain to more easily see the Engineers's panel. Same reason you rarely see circuit breakers on the left side of the cockpit.

    Flying beyond TBOH

I have just finished overhauling the engine in my Cessna 180. It had been overhauled twice before and had 1375 hours on it since the last one in 1984. It was running just fine with very little oil consumption, the first clue that it was junk inside was when we pulled a cylinder that had been...

    Floatplane crash in AK

That could have been me thirty years ago. I once hauled over 1800 pounds of salmon from Pilot Point to King Salmon in a 185. That was not a happy airplane. I learned not to do that again. This young man was not so lucky.

I'm guessing that the Check Airman that let it happen is probably in more trouble than the student. They will both need to take 709 rides with the feds though. At the very least the Check Airman will lose his Check Airman letter.

Big airplanes require you to "land" the nose gear, it must be flown to touchdown before you lose elevator effectiveness. If you just let it drop the impact is massive! I spoke with a friend from Atlas about it and he said it was a new guys first landing out of the sim. I think his prior...
