    Mag Failure

Just a quick side note. The mag was running fine before the failure. RPM drop on each mag was no more than 50 RPM. There was no sign impending failure. Ran fine the previous flight and was completely dead during the following run up. I assume the mag died at some point during my previous flight...

Going to go see the hick . . .

French Lick is nice. You can call the resort and they will send a car to pick you up.

    Mag Failure

I’ve put about 175 hours on the plane. I know, I need to fly more! So apparently the mag lasted nearly 1,400 hours. It is a Slick mag, and the shop rebuilt it for a little over $1,000.

    Mag Failure

Yeah, I probably will just eat the loss. Just very surprised that it appears the work was never done.

    Mag Failure

It is a Slick mag and they are going to rebuild it.

    Mag Failure

The verdict is in. It looks like I got screwed. The mag failed, and I need a complete rebuild. When I bought the plane in 2014, the right mag had 1,200 hours on it without ever being serviced. As part of the purchase agreement, I wanted the mag replaced which the seller agreed to do. The shop...

    Mag Failure

The shop was pretty busy and told me they couldn't take a look right away. Still waiting for an open spot. I will update once they provide a diagnosis.

Well aware of how to clear fouled plugs. That’s not the issue.

Relatively low-maintenance airplanes that have decent cross-country performance?

Might want to consider a 182 if you want a little more speed over the 172

    Mag Failure

Agreed. They are very thorough. They are pretty busy right now so not sure how long it will take before they can get it in.

    Mag Failure

Maintenance on my plane is done by the book. No shortcuts or deferred maintenance. The right magneto only has about 150 hours on it.

    Mag Failure

If I win the lottery, there will be a new plane in my hangar in short order. Until then....

    Mag Failure

I believe they are Slicks but not certain.

    Mag Failure

Worth considering, but I thought they replaced the left mag. The plane starts on the left mag. It is right mag that failed.

    Mag Failure

I hope that’s all it is, but I doubt I could get that lucky.

    Mag Failure

Well, it is a perfect day for flying. So I took a vacation day and headed for the airport. Taxied out to the run up area. Left mag - check. Right mag - engine dies. Restart the engine and check the right mag again - engine immediately dies. Put her back in the hangar and scheduled maintenance. I...

    Flat Nosewheel Tire Rant

All it takes is a little FOD. Had something similar happen to me. I can’t recall the cost but it wasn’t too bad as aviation repairs go.
