Buying Plane without Panel Mounted GPS

For instrument flying you either want a plane with an IFR (really WAAS) GPS, or you will want to plan on installing one.

Is My Prop Governor on the way Out?

Yes, and if the low pitch stop results in some RPM less than redline, then the unloading of the prop over the takeoff roll should result in an increase in RPM. If you don't see that steady change, you don't have low power as the main cause of low RPM.

Is My Prop Governor on the way Out?

I think it can't be power output related. If the engine wasn't developing enough power to keep the prop off the fine pitch stops at the start of the takeoff roll, then the RPM would quickly build to 2700 as airspeed increased on the takeoff roll. If the RPM was constant, the governor is...

The most difficult thing I have to do when providing flight instruction....

Being a good CFI is a real art. I tip my hat to the lot of you!

    Cessna 421B down at KFRG

How he survived that vertical acceleration is beyond me. Ouch.

Experienced Pilots: Do you always calculate takeoff distance?

Very much like CG calculations, It's more about knowing what is 'out of the norm' for you and your airplane. Examples are helpful. In my 182, even heavily loaded, I know that I can easily get airborne in 1000 ft at my normal density altitudes. So unless I'm outside my normal operations, i.e...

    Cessna 421B down at KFRG

Makes one wonder where they got fuel last...

    Cessna 421B down at KFRG

Right after departure I heard NY Tracon talking to aircraft looking for a lost contact. Anyone have details?

    Realistic aviation movies?

Love how Doug forgets how to fly as soon as the ribbon is cut :D

    Fuel Cap...

Don't worry, you'll make most all the other mistakes too eventually. Just try not to make them twice :)

What’s going on here? (JetBlue flight)

GA airplanes are largely populated with GA people, not with the average airline passenger. Jeeze, really? You guys bored tonight?

What’s going on here? (JetBlue flight)

Look I totally get that, I'm pretty good at this aero stuff :) And I'm also quite certain that flying at 8500ft on average will SUCK compared to gliding along in the flight levels. If you are arguing against that, you're just plain wrong. Sorry!

What’s going on here? (JetBlue flight)

Pretty sure passengers don't much value the difference between lightly loaded and heavily loaded wings while they are yacking up their lunch. Re: DC-3 flying in the 30's for reference.

What’s going on here? (JetBlue flight)

You've never had bad boundary layer turbulence at this time of year? I sure as hell have.

What’s going on here? (JetBlue flight)

Because flight at low levels is frequently more turbulent than up in the flight levels.

Landing A 182 In My Back Yard?

I have a 182 and that would be too short for my comfort level. Maybe an RV would be a better choice?
