    My Glider Club Impressions...

yep, I flew my sub $14,000 glider (in my thumbnail) for 20+ years. I sort of won a lottery a few years ago (insurance settlement), and graduated to a sub $35,000 glider. Then I go the airport meetings and listen to all the neighbors complain about those rich pilots making noise and using the...

    Military pilots favor gliders?

I agree with the above. Friend of mines job in the military was retrieving the cameras from U-2's when they landed. He asked the U-2 pilots what they did for fun on the weekend. When they told him fly glider, he decided needed to check out flying gliders, and has not been flying glider for...

I recently watched them haul off a 182 for scrap, that had been improperly stripped. There is value in getting someone that knows what they are doing. To OP's question, my impression with very little experience to back it up is unless you can do most of the work yourself, which rules out pretty...

TOP 10 THINGS THAT WORRY A PPL CANDIDATE

Not if you think about it a bit. This is probably the reason the DPE says this as pilots mistake the soft field landing to mean touching down soft vs landing on soft material. You can do a soft landing and easily still not meet the ACS requirement for a soft field landing. The main point of a...

    Cheapest Twin on EBay Down

Apparently to many engines scare me, one is scary, two is worse :) Actually I would probably like flying multiengine stuff, just never had the money or the need to do so. I seem to have acquired 8000+ hours flying one engine or less. My friend tells the story of his Multi engine check-ride...

Changes to the ON SSRI pathway

Thanks Bruce, I really appreciate you posting updates to FAA policies. On a slightly related note. But probably sending the thread a totally different direction. Quoting one of your previous quotes was something like "When the FAA says do ABC that doesn't mean do BCA" One of my students...

    Thinking About a New Roof

my North side shingles put material into my gutter for 20+ years before I replaced it. It wasn't leaking but many of the shingles were curling up and no longer had material on them I probably waited at least 5 years longer than I should have to replace it, But the only issue it had was it...

    Thinking About a New Roof

I am no expert but did the roof on my previous house twice. I lived there 28 years. But is was also only about 1000 sqft of roof. I just used Home Depot 25year shingles both times. 1st time I stripped the double layer of singles off the south side only. Put Tar Paper down and shingles, Borrowed...

If you own it long enough you will likely get one or more of these $25/50k repairs. We have owned our Scout for about 25 years now. Did really good for the 1st 20years, but about 5 years ago a Crankshaft AD finally required an engine tear down and new cylinders for the $25K repair. looks like...

Best Private oral test prep Guides.

I have using the ASA Oral test prep guide for over 30 years. Was going through the lastest version and it occurs to me it is twice as thick as it has gotten a lot more wordy on a lot of the answers making it harder to figure out what the "short answer" is. I thought it was wordy enough when I...

    T-Hangar neighbor. WWYD?

If they are like our T-Hangers, make sure to sweep your hanger out before you go fly. Then be nice and open the door back up for them. Perhaps if you over do it they won't be able to reach the door to close it:) Or don't quite get it open, they might not notice and take out a wing tip pushing...

What's the deal with CFII's that don't want to fly IMC?

That would be me. I love the opportunity to train in actual conditions. But out west that is rare. If it is IMC it is usually below minimums, Thunderstorms or Icing. I tell my students that for IFR flying out west in a most small single engine planes pretty much means we will train for 40 hours...

Why is my mechanic so against a turbo?

I suspect you will find the main advantage of the Turbo on the cross country trips the ability to get above weather, especially if flying IFR. I have had pilots tell me that given the choice between Fiki and Turbo they would prefer the Turbo. I.e. stay out of the ice rather than fly in it. Brian

    Converging from opposite sides

pretty much what you said. If the other pilot is low time or not enough recent experience to barely make radio calls. Which sort of sounds like your description. i.e. "Bushsmasher 123, I am already downwind for 04, winds are favoring 04, what are your intentions.?" the response sound like he...

    Flying the Piper Pawnee

:yeahthat: and complacency. You can get very good a taking off, landing and towing operations. While Glider pilots making dumb moves tend to injure tow pilots or worse, Tow pilots more often just damage the tow plane. Seen/heard these events... fast taxi, hit the brake and swing around into...
