    Bahamas Fly-Out Roll Call

The place looks great! Sadly it appears we'll need to sit this one out, as my better half doesn't get her spring break until the following week. If there's how-to sessions or the like held for the group in the preparation phase, though, I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall -- it's still a...

    6Y9 2022 Fly in/Camp in

My wife & I were talking on the flight home and the day after about how this didn't feel like the other aviation groups we've briefly tried -- she noted that people were friendly and invited her to their conversations, plus having spouses around for non-flying chat, and a younger average...

Why chock the wheels when in a hangar?

Towbar stays on in the hangar, but once I pull it out, towbar is not attached unless it's in my hand. That's a hard rule ever since a hangar neighbor years ago saved me from starting up with the towbar on (typical "interrupted routine" story). I do chock in the hangar, the asphalt floor is...

    6Y9 2022 Fly in/Camp in

Back home safe, after a quick stop to check the beach at Washington Island (turns out that stop came with a busted nosewheel pant, no charge). We had an awesome time, and glad to meet so many wonderful folks! Shoutouts to Diz & Brad for hosting, Leslie & Grant for breakfast, Rich for the...

    6Y9 2022 Fly in/Camp in

Came here to post a nearly identical screenshot! Airplane is field, tent is loaded…looking good for an early AM departure with plans to arrive in time for lunch.

    Bahamas Fly-Out Roll Call

Potentially interested depending on where the dates settle vis-a-vis work responsibilities. My wife & I have talked about a Bahamas trip for half a decade, and learning the ropes as part of a group seems ideal.

    Lessons learned from grass operations.

That looks like a neat spot for a weekend runout with a tent and a good book. Was it easy to get permission to land & tie down for a day or two?

Accelerated instrument courses in SE MN?

@psween I'm watching with interest as I'm in the same boat and the same area (RST based). Do you hope to train in your own plane? I've looked at some of the accelerated courses and it seems many don't offer training in aircraft other than their rental fleet. The other thing I've seen common...

Midwest POA June Brunch: June 22, 2024 1000 CDT, The Jet Room at KMSN, Madison, WI.

Quite possibly in, depending on the time. Need an excuse to get some hours on the repaired engine.

    Removing Lord mounts

Thanks all for the advice. Got them out this afternoon with some isopropyl followed by penetrating oil around the edges with a syringe, then using a drift in the bolt holes against the opposite side plate, then a wooden dowel to tap the remaining side out around the edges. All cleaned up and...

    Removing Lord mounts

RV-9A, the engine is fully removed. Lord J-9613-40 mounts are both the existing and replacement part. I’m not so concerned with mounting the engine (did that once already, solo) but these old mounts are stuck in the engine mount quite well, it seems.

    Removing Lord mounts

Got a couple Lord mounts that have sagged and need replacement, but darn if I can get the old ones unstuck from the dynafocal rings. Any advice from our resident mechanics? Tried a wood drift with a light hammer, with no luck — a little reluctant to just break out the BFH and go to town...

    ATC and ADSB

The stated current draw is max 40 (28V input) or 85 (14V input) microamps. Someone smarter than me will have to do the capacitor math! I just tied mine direct to battery with an inline fuse. I don’t see anything in either the install manual or pilot’s guide that indicates the is available...

    ATC and ADSB

If your 345 GPS takes that long to get a fix on power up, I’d suggest checking that the installer properly hooked up the keepalive power input (a separate wire from the main power input, it needs to go direct to a battery and stay powered 24/7). Without it, the GPS has no stored almanac...

Midwest POA June Brunch: June 22, 2024 1000 CDT, The Jet Room at KMSN, Madison, WI.

26-Jun is out for me but following/adding myself to the “pilots of the ill-defined Midwest” list for future shindigs.

    How to Not Quit?

I’m feeling this...between work and weather this time of year is the roughest for me to get in the air, and with no destinations open this year’s been even worse. My wife and I flew up to KFFM last weekend on a reasonable day but the weather shifted and ended up having to stay a night, borrow a...

Who represents the MSP and Duluth area?

Early April is sweatshirt and jacket weather. Well, unless we get a couple feet of snow like a few years back... But the bitter cold stuff should be behind us by that point. Though I do keep my trapper hat handy year round.

Halfway between MSP and Rochester here, based at Red Wing. If you come, bring some sun along.

What do you do for living (or used to)?

Broadcast Engineer (though I duck when I say that since it’s not REAL engineering like the other folks in here). Basically I design, install, maintain, operate, and teach others to operate systems to make radio/TV/webcasts. In my free time I build/fix stuff (airplane, houses) and pick up...
