The paperwork of it - Converting a Mooney to fixed gear?

I have been reading out about the Mooney M20D being sold as a trainer that "graduates" to a complex aircraft. I'm curious what impact this would have on the possibilities of "Walking Back" the upgrades? For example if one has a complex M20D, I presume that the prop could be converted to fixed...

Cheapest IFR Panel - Starting from nothing?

In this hypothetical - I was discussing a Cessna 150 that had been looted for its engine and panel when someone was building an experimental. I turned the plane down because I don't have a place to work on it (and I think it was sold for parts), but looking back I am curious how much it cost vs...

    LSA Inspection Training suggestions?

Before the pandemic, I was planning to attend his course. If its anything like his communication was beforehand, then it seems promising. But, as a result of a crazy couple of years, I no longer live in Atlanta, and I am hoping to avoid flying across the country, so I am looking for something...

    LSA Inspection Training suggestions?

This list is far from up to date. Its where I started.

    LSA Inspection Training suggestions?

I am considering taking the 2 day LSA Inspection Training course. I have reached out to Rainbow Aviation about upcoming courses, but I am looking for options in case there is something that better fits into my schedule. Besides Rainbow, who else is teaching the LSA Inspection course?

Fuel / Engine Additive (Automotive Addition)

Presuming you have a Corolla (if I remember correctly from a previous post), with a 1.8L engine (the most common one they are selling. You are dealing with a proven design with sequential fuel injection. You are less likely to have the build up in the intake and valves that many modern direct...

PSA - Don't leave your headset in your truck

The headset + what I expect for the cost of repairs is only slightly more than the deductible, its not worth the higher insurance rates from a claim. The headset was all that was stolen.

PSA - Don't leave your headset in your truck

Some joker broke into my truck and, after failing to steal one of the easiest to steal vehicles on the road, stole my Zulu 3s. I'm very disappointed knowing that somewhere out there is a "car thief" who cannot steal a 20 year old car that lacks an immobilizer and a steering lock. Also, I need...

    Jeppensen down for everyone?

If I recall correctly, shooting an approach with an out of date database is legal if you confirm that the approach is unchanged since the last update as part of your preflight planning. So, shooting approaches with an old database and Foreflight (to confirm the approach is unchanged) is what...

Cleanest way to open oil filter

I think so, if you look at about 2:26 you can see the filter is full before install.

Cleanest way to open oil filter

Before spending $100 on this, I would consider spending $345 on a reusable oil filter. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/challengerLifetime.php?clickkey=4779 (Note: I have never used one, but I was planning to buy one on my next annual partially due to difficulty finding filters...

Best Hangar Air compressor for maintenance tasks?

I would spend a little extra for something that is quieter. A loud compressor will be made worse by the echo of an all metal hangar. Just to clarify: I agree that an expensive unit is not required, but I would either upgrade to something like HF's quiet line, or just a small oil lubricated...

    CVT transmission

Hybrid CVTs are a different beast than conventional CVTs. The videos @Spring Ford posted are worth a watch, but hybrid drive lines have huge advantages for reliability on a well designed transmission. On a gasoline car (especially newer, small displacement engines) starting from a stop puts a...

    CVT transmission

Personally, I would try to avoid most CVTs, but if that were not an option I would focus on fluid changes. Most CVTs (specifically Nissans) tend to degrade the trans fluid, to the point where some are suggesting changing the fluid as often as every 25K miles. I don't have enough direct...

    Ipad mini for foreflight

I carry a USB 12v adaptor and a USB battery pack. But one of the rentals I used to fly did not have a 12V adaptor available. Also, when its really hot, charging the iPad increases the chance of it overheating.

Cessna 150C vs 150D, where does the extra 100lbs come from? (A TC Question)

I was under the impression the tail was the same. Thank you @Pilawt. I guess that explains why the TC was never used like the other airframes mentioned.

Cessna 150C vs 150D, where does the extra 100lbs come from? (A TC Question)

This is a type certificate question. To the best of my knowledge there is no structural difference between a Cessna 150C and a 150D. In fact, the rear window is less aerodynamic, so (in theory) the performance would be worse with the 150D. But the 150D is rated for 1600lbs gross and the C...

Are there any insurance companies that insure uncommon ELSAs at a reasonable rate?

I was expecting closer to $2K/yr (because this is a tricycle gear). I am considering flying the plane 10-15 hours before insuring it, in fact I was planning to go liability only for the first year (with a $1K budget) if hull was over $3K. I never considered the possibility of a quote that high.

Are there any insurance companies that insure uncommon ELSAs at a reasonable rate?

I was looking at a Quasar ELSA that seemed like a perfect fit for my mission. Enough useful load for 2 people and an HKS700E that burns 2.4 gal/hour in cruise. But, after requesting insurance quotes, I think I have to move on. First, my broker could not find anyone to write the policy so she...

    Ipad mini for foreflight

The gtx-345 ADS-B in can pair with the iPad on Foreflight and Garmin Pilot (But not other EFBs). I like having a built in GPS on my iPad for redundancy (I have lost electrical twice, in 2 different planes, in my first 200 hours flying).
