Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2021-01-02: Lovely. Just received a letter that the FAA has received the reports submitted by my HIMS AME from November. The FAA then asks me, to paraphrase, "engage with a HIMS AME, random UA monitoring, peer support group monitoring" and then, after 3-4 months of the above, resubmit. The...

Will I be required to do the HIMS program?

I think that the FAA has defined "dependence" as anyone that has had a DUI or, at least, accepting the NTSB recommendations related to DUIs has allowed them to apply the "dependence" term to anyone that has received a DUI.

3rd Class SI stuck in HIMS

My takeaway: no more baking with extracts. Thanks for the heads up. The woman that processes my UAs has said to me that it would take ingestion of quite a bit of alcohol to show up in the test and I know of someone who, at the beginning of COVID lockdowns, was religious about sanitizing with...

3rd Class SI stuck in HIMS

****. Now I'm terrified! I love to bake and use extracts (e.g., vanilla and almond) often. Hopefully, the heat in baking drives off the alcohol in the extracts. I haven't had a positive ETG yet (since I've been doing twice/month, beginning in September, now down to 14 in 12). Guess that's a good...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Did my first ILS approach under the hood on Thursday and it. Was. Glorious. Don't get me wrong. Instructor called me a "needle chaser" when I should have just followed the huge purple line on the Garmin but when we hit 4,700' and the hood came off, it was just spectacular to see the runway...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2020-11-19: Spoke with Lawrence in the Des Moines, WA, RFS office this morning who let me know that OKC has received my package (I thought it was supposed to have gone to DC, but I'm assuming my HIMS AME knows best) and that yes, OKC is the right place for it to have been sent. It's in the "to...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2020-11-09: Met with my HIMS AME this AM. After some pleasantries, the first words out of his mouth were "the whole medical certification process with the FAA is just silly." He'll submit my packet to the FAA today and has no idea how long it will take them to review it. I've done my part! I...

Which STC for C172 with Franklin 180hp?

Thanks for the help all. This is a research-only project right now as the aircraft isn't even on the market yet. I just wanted to learn as much as I could about the 172/Franklin 180hp conversion before I seriously considered it as a possibility. It's a good price but might not be what I'm...

Which STC for C172 with Franklin 180hp?

Being a neophyte in the world of aviation is hindering my research on C172 engine STC. Or my Google-fu is lacking. On or the other. Perhaps both. I met someone recently that will be selling a C172/180 with the 180hp Franklin modification in the timeframe that aligns with my acquisition...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2020-10-27: Neuropsyhologist just informed me that he received my medical records from the FAA today and will be sending his report to my HIMS AME today. Apparently, the RFS involvement to help get a "rush" on my medical records being processed and sent out by CAMI in OKC worked.

General maintenance cost: 6cyl + CS prop vs 4cyl fixed pitch

Thanks all for your thoughts. I think I've read nearly every thread on "172 vs. 182" and it's always "buy whichever fits your mission best." My expected mission does include flying into high airports (I'm in SW Montana, after all) with people but not on every flight. Not even on every 4th...

General maintenance cost: 6cyl + CS prop vs 4cyl fixed pitch

I think I know the answer to this question but thought I'd ask the POA hive mind. I'm at the early stages of aircraft ownership research and with (roughly) identified mission in hand, have started doing more research into C182s and 180hp C172s (and other hot-rod 172s). For me and my mission, a...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

After my HIMS neuropsyh mentioned that he had "connections" in OKC, I had hoped that the records would get out sooner rather than later. That did not, however, prevent me from calling to double check. I ended up chatting with Connie in the RFS office in Des Moines, WA to check to see whether...

1 year later I get a letter from the FAA

You've heard the phrase "trust, but verify?" FAA CAMI ditches the former and forces the latter. I'm a safe (student) pilot, too, and with my colorful background (a DUI from >20 years ago with no recorded BAC and periodic drug use from back in the day), regardless of how long it's been since I've...

Owners: did you overbuy for your original expected mission?

Hmm... It appears as though in this community there is no such thing as "too much plane."

Owners: did you overbuy for your original expected mission?

I've read here and elsewhere that many aspiring first-time pilot-owners think that they'll either be flying a lot more than reality bears out or that they'll have a need for more plane than they end up needing. For the aircraft owners here, how did you define your original mission (i.e., before...

My past, starting as a student

I have a DUI on my record form 1999 but have been sober and active in recovery since 2001, have gone back to school and gotten a BS in Biology (with honors), an MS (honors), published several papers as senior author in peer-reviewed journals, and have had stable employment in financial and...

My past, starting as a student

If you have a previously-expired 3rd class medical certificate and there are no other medically disqualifying conditions, you can fly without a current medical certificate. The limitations include flying a plane < some maximum gross weight at altitudes < 18,000' and within the US (or Mexico...

My past, starting as a student

I'm not sure if this is the case. The FAA thinks that more than one drug or alcohol events in a person's life equates to substance "dependence" and will assume the applicant is dependent, rather than just an abuser, and will deny any level of medical application. Here, the OP says that they had...
