Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2021-05-27 Talked to Lawrence at the RFS office in Des Moines, WA, who let me know that the Drug and Alcohol section has completed their review of my HIMS packet and passed it on to the physician who's now had it in their queue for "about a month" or so. Lawrence seemed to think that I should...

Long shot question about acquaintance travel from KMBT to KRYY

Ah. I get it. I've been particularly slow all day today.

Long shot question about acquaintance travel from KMBT to KRYY

A one-way car rental from BNA to Marietta, GA is ~$150 from a number of different agencies (at least the big ones), so from a cost-perspective, it ends up being wash.

Long shot question about acquaintance travel from KMBT to KRYY

I know this is a long shot, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I'm traveling to the SE US (metro Atlanta) to visit my folks next week but have to stop in Nashville for an afternoon for some work-related business. My original plan to get from Nashvegas to Marietta, GA was to rent a car but now that...

Third-Class Medical deferred due to DUI 16 years ago

Does this relate to "justice," though? I've read other GOTI (here and elsewhere) suggest that flying isn't a right. As a result, while sitting through a deferral really sucks, it's not delayed justice, is it?

Third-Class Medical deferred due to DUI 16 years ago

To be fair, from my limited sample size, HIMS issues proceed fairly slowly. Regardless, any sort of deferral seems to result in a months-long delay as CAMI works through staffing and technological challenges. Good luck!

Third-Class Medical deferred due to DUI 16 years ago

The FAA cares not that there was no conviction and that you were deferred. You were impaired and you chose to drive. I'm in the middle of something similar. Here's my tale thus far...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Still awaiting medical but did my first night flying last week. After my most recent daytime flights in gusting crosswinds to 30kts, doing stop and goes at 22:30 with 5-7kt crosswinds were absolutely nothing. Nothing. Most were just greasers and CFI was impressed. Even the family friend CFI...

Why the FAA is so tough on alcoholics...

Or just a Monday morning. Or a Thursday morning. Or any other morning for an alcoholic.

Why the FAA is so tough on alcoholics...

To be fair, most alcoholics--in or out of any recovery program--don't need much of an excuse to relapse or go out and do more R&D.

Good HIMS AME recommendations in Wisconsin/Illinois

I'm going through HIMS for a different reason than you and my HIMS AME is a 4 hour drive on a good-weather day. We met in person once in November when he took me on and have since had monthly telehealth visits. For any testing I've had to do (HIMS neuropsych), that's been in person. My...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2021-03-22 HIMS AME let me know this AM that he sent his letter to CAMI requesting my SI. More waiting but perhaps movement soon?

ADHD neuropsychologist exam preparation? brain games?

I'm a data scientist (so not a software dev, but I do write a lot of R and Python) at a well-known digital healthcare firm. I took the full neurocog battery back in October. I did no preparation other than try to relax, get a good night's sleep (impossible, really), and got some food in me...

    HIMS lawsuits

Totally off topic, but when I had my HIMS neuropsych visit back in October, my Delta AmEx was offering triple points * USD. The conversation with the office went like this: Me: Do you take AmEx? Them: We prefer Visa/Mastercard. Me: But you take AmEx? Them: We prefer Visa/Mastercard. It's lower...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

On today's AME check-in, doc says (to paraphrase) "we'll do one more of these in March. After that, I'll be able to submit my report detailing your compliance and your SI will be on its way soon thereafter. If you're not interested in anything higher than a 3rd class, you should jump to Basic...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

Heard back from the HIMS AME this AM. FAA wants 3 months of meetings with the HIMS AME (that can be conducted via zoom as we are four hours away from each other in best conditions, 5-6hrs during winter driving conditions) and at the end of those 3 months, AME submits necessary reports and the...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

I know it's not bad news and I plan on seeing through what I've started, but man, it's so demotivating. I feel like the money I'm spending on flying right now might be better saved and when there is a timeline on when the medical will come through, just blow through the remaining lessons/hours...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

2021-01-21: Heard from HIMS AME the other day. Their words: Man. This is such a killer. I'm supposed to be flying today--and have been nearly every two weeks to keep skills/knowledge up--but this whole process is just killing my enthusiasm and desire. I'm tempted to just put everything on hold...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

Agreed. I've found that the RFS has been helpful in a number of ways. I'll wait to hear from my HIMS AME for their game plan before I reach out. It's nice knowing there's an additional resource out there. Date on the letter was 2020-12-22, postmark was 2020-12-28.
