Complex Medical Deferral w/Intl Move Triage

A personal anecdote: I have a single DUI from 1999. In 2008, I travelled to Canada for a professional conference, the first time I had travelled to Canada since my DUI. I was concerned I was going to be turned away at the border but the border officer didn't even bat an eye. It's possible that...

What's the best way to start instrument training?

Great info here. Thanks for sharing. This definitely does help. I chatted with the owner of the school where I got my PPL. They mentioned that they have a shortage of instructors and have been having to turn students away. Hearing that, I made the decision to just focus on getting the written...

What's the best way to start instrument training?

There's a TON of great information here. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Again, it's surprising how similar they all are, which is definitely not the norm for POA. I infer, then, that this REALLY IS the best way to do things. I've reached out to the Part 61 school where I got my PPL and...

What's the best way to start instrument training?

Thanks for this. I'm not quite sure what to expect. Reading others' experience, I'm not expecting a walk in the park but thinking about timing for this is challenging. Which begs the question of whether or not I should start the rating now or wait until spring 2024? I live in the northern...

What's the best way to start instrument training?

When the first two respondents agree on a board like PoA, it must mean that this is, by far, the best way to do things. Thanks to you both!

What's the best way to start instrument training?

I have 212 TT, 152 PIC, and 87 XC and I'd like to start instrument training. I'm aware of the hours required in 61.65 but am wondering how best to handle the mix of under-the-hood-with-safety-pilot hours vs training with a CFII. Is it best to start out with some initial instrument training...

Complex Medical Deferral w/Intl Move Triage

I think that working with a knowledgeable senior AME is your best path forward. Hopefully Dr. Bruce can help out. However, I'm pretty sure that the FAA will want monitoring, at a minimum, and will defer you into HIMS. If they let you do things from another country, great! If not, like you said...

    FAQ: DUI's and alcohol/drug abuse

You don't have to speak at all at an 12-step meeting. No lying required. All you have to do is drop your log sheet into the basket as it goes around. Or get the chairperson to sign it at the end. The FAA required that I go to AA meetings when I was in HIMS (I am an alcoholic in recovery (> 22...

Search for AME specializing in difficult cases (past Hx of ADHD)

To OP: Good luck! The medical process can be challenging to navigate. Find a good HIMS AME and let them guide you. @redbaron is right though: 0.9865 seems very high, especially considering that the LRPV is an "estimated probability of brain dysfunction." For comparison, I was required to do the...

Looking for HIMS Psychiatrists for Eval Under $2k

My layperson's understanding is that the neuropsychologist is more quantitative (e.g., administers tests, interprets scores, etc) while the psychiatrist is more qualitative. The former is the person that administers the full HIMS battery of testing, including the COGSCREEN-AE. The psychiatrist...

    FAQ: DUI's and alcohol/drug abuse

FAA is clearly a "trust, but verify" type of bureaucracy. Unfortunately, their verification procedures can be onerous and take a long damn time. My experience was almost identical to yours, including timeline, but two years earlier. HIMS AME submitted my packet in March 2021 and I had my SI by...

    Completed CogScreen AE

Clearly, I should ask for my results from my neuropsych!

Looking for HIMS Psychiatrists for Eval Under $2k

This is just the neurospsych list, NOT the psychiatrist list. They are different.

    Completed CogScreen AE

Huh. I wonder why my neuropsych wouldn't share mine. I have his write up; now that I"ve jumped to basic med I should email and ask for them.

0.25 bac going for third class

Good luck! I attend AA meetings regularly (and don't consider it religious at all; it is what an attendee makes it), and have been for many years, and got my 3rd class medical a few years ago. Jumped to Basic Med earlier this year because the hoops I had to jump through were dumb. It's doable...

    Completed CogScreen AE

I took the COGSCREEN for my 3rd class HIMS process and the neuropsych told me the FAA wouldn't allow him to give me the actual test results. Although neuropsych sent those to the FAA, the only thing he would send to me was his prose document describing his interpretation and recommendations.

    Another DUI related post

Hey there! I applied for my 3rd class medical in July 2020 after 19 years of sobriety (in AA) after getting a DUI in 1999. I was denied a 3rd class in September 2020 but was encouraged to go the HIMS route. I was required to do the full battery neuropsych but was not required to see a...

    DUI conviction medical ETA?

Man, huge range here. Sure hoping for the left-hand tail of that distribution for you. Patience can be hard to come by when waiting on the FAA but certainly is necessary.

    Basic Med Physician

Your regular physician can do them, if you have one. The doc at Bozeman Creek Family Health (screen shot above) is an AME so if you sign up with her, she'll likely want to do a MedExpress on you unless you are explicit. When I jumped to Basic Med in Jan, I googled "DOT Physicals" and picked...

Going Basic Med After HIMS SI Medical Certificate Expiration

I considered it polite to let my HIMS AME know that I was going basic med, but I've not seen any requirement.
