    Electronic Logbook?

I misplaced my original logbook (not a whole lot in it, but some flight training), so I started using Google Sheets to backup everything. I've got it on my phone and iPad Mini 6 adjacent to Foreflight. Sheets is relatively free and you can export it from Google to Excel even if you want to...

Want To Buy iPad Mini 6 with cellular

The Cherokee I fly has a stratus transponder with adsb in, so it's in the plane. If I buy a plane, that will be one of the first upgrades I'll make when the transponder is up for recertification.

Want To Buy iPad Mini 6 with cellular

I just bought the mini 6 wifi for $399 weeks ago. The guys I know that have iPads all have the iPad Air or Mini 6 wifi... My cellphone has a wifi hotspot, so I'm going to utilize that when I want to pack foreflight and update the maps. Otherwise, I'll be linked to the stratus for traffic...

How to get started after long layoff?

I started flying 15 years ago and quit training because my wife ran up $100k in college debt and we were trying to start a family. By the time we bought a house and paid on her debt, we had 2 kids in daycare, car payment, etc... I got back behind the helm last year. My first flight back was...

Cold, hard, non-sugar-coated answers please. How many hours before a student should move on?

I stopped flying when I was told I was about ready to solo at the age of 27. I kind of panicked because I figured had I solo'd, I would have completed training and then continued flying. I work for the gubment and make modest pay....at the time, my wife was in grad school and racking up $100k...

age at solo vs hours to solo

Who cares how long it takes? Those that fly sooner still have less experience. I agree, not everyone gets the feel as quickly...but taking longer may expose you to different temps and weather. Advantage goes to longevity eventually.

What happens if you lose both fuel pumps?

Unless you're Denzel. Then you just fly inverted in an emergency and gravity is no longer a problem.

    Bird bombs

I even forgot they were sending CDs out those days. I remember using a piece of tape to make those 760kb 3.5" floppies writable.

    The fear is driving me…

I've owned and used ANR sets before. I just wanted a Bose, but was going to wait before investing in one. The Lightspeed reviews I saw seem good, but some people aren't happy with the fit/quality still. I figured I'd get my cheap set with a lifetime warranty and will likely get a Bose with...

    The fear is driving me…

I bought a $120 basic ASA, non ANR set and have been happy enough with it. I could understand how some people would need a lighter set of headphones. I'm a big guy so I can handle the weight of a standard set. I purposefully didn't want an ANR set because I'm wanting to hear all the noises...

    How did Foreflight do it?

I was just using it on my Android phone, but not sure what iPads do. Location services can include gps or cell tower references. GP actually shows altitude as GPS altitude, likely so if you're using it, you'll be aware that it's source is only as good as the radio signal, which is suspectable...

    How did Foreflight do it?

I was playing with Garmin Pilot on a recent flight and it pulled GPS altitude. Airplane mode definitely disables radios, but perhaps not gps?

    Studying for the Written Exam

I started going through the Jeppesen exam test prep yesterday. I knocked out the first few chapters and will be doing more this week. Sporty's was offering $50 off their private pilot course in November. The current promo is $100 off private pilot and the IFR combo. I went ahead and jumped...

    Studying for the Written Exam

I'm a few months away from being far enough along in training, so I'm going for longevity before I resort to exam cram tactics. I've heard good things about both Sporty's and King. Sporty's seems to have the edge because they just developed an app, have a Roku app, and a lifetime license.

    Studying for the Written Exam

I started long ago...ran out of money after 15 or so hours...logbook was likely stolen...so I'm starting over. I've logged maybe 3 hours so far and had the discussion with my CFI. He just held up a few books and said I could do whatever I want pertaining to the online stuff. I was studying a...

    Studying for the Written Exam

I know....I'd just rather be in the air with that money! I'm only starting flight training again now because my other financial goals are aligned for it. (finally)

    Studying for the Written Exam

I've read that both King's and Sporty's is good. I hate to part with the $200+ for either just because that could be spent on a lesson in the air. I've heard from someone else to invest in the Jeppesen book. I may order that today and get rolling before I decide whether or not to jump on the...

    Studying for the Written Exam

I'm going to start studying for the written test. I've got the FAR/AIM book and found these example questions: https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/test_questions/media/par_questions.pdf There are a bunch of youtube videos that cover ground school, like the ones given at MIT. (search...

    CFI Training - Sideloading

I always was a huge fan of flight simming. If you have a beefy enough computer, you can get Flight Sim 2020 and go to General Options/Camera and change the horizonal picture of the camera from 50 to around 70 or 75. That puts you in the CFI seat. Then just do some for free flying until you...
