    Trad Session get-togethers at AV?

This is coming together!! 7- 9pm (or whenever) Thursday, 7/27 at the UltraLight Forum Tent. More details to be posted at the Flying Musicians Association (FMA) site and here as I get them. I believe we'll even show up in the list of events put out by EAA. Here's the blurb I'm putting up at...

    Trad Session get-togethers at AV?

I'm talking with the Flying Musicians guys and we're seeing what we can set up. It would be in the latter half of the week in the evening. They're working out the details and told me to hold off on a specific date. (And yes, the music is still by the red barn for those who have been to it in the...

    Trad Session get-togethers at AV?

I asked EAA about any informal sessions and Dick Knapinski was kind enough to answer and point me at the Flying Musicians Association. We'll see where this goes. Looks like a great organization and I'll probably sign up as a member regardless (https://flyingmusicians.org/)

It (almost) feels like 1968 again!

My wife had an MG and a T-shirt that said, "The British drink warm beer because they have Lucas refrigerators".

    Trad Session get-togethers at AV?

Hopefully, I can gather some other musicians and we'll have a grand old time! If you can't play an instrument, you can sing along. If you can't sing along, you can stomp your foot, clap your hands, swing your head, or sway back and forth. If you can't do any of those, we'll put your body...

    Trad Session get-togethers at AV?

Are there any places where musicians gather to play in the evening? I'm actually looking to join up with an Irish session somewhere on the grounds. There used to be an open-mic gathering over by the red barn in the evening, but I'm not finding any mention of it anymore. If there isn't one...

    Explain plane spotting to me

They'll have a sheet of aircraft they're expecting to arrive and want a photo of. They'll also be watching a flight tracker and have an aircraft radio. And yes, the airport security, at least in the US, chases away the spotters if they're not in a public viewing area. You can even be on a...

    Kentmorr Restaurant (3W3) has reopened!

Yep, make sure you do the SFRA briefing if you plan on coming within 60 miles of the DCA VOR. See https://www.faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/courseLanding.aspx?cID=405

    Kentmorr Restaurant (3W3) has reopened!

They did a bunch of drainage work. Of course, make sure it's open before flying in. If things get too soggy, a NOTAM will say it's closed to transients. However, that should happen less now.

    Loons are encountering in-flight icing…

From a Loon rescue group in Wisconsin: ALERT!!! LOON FALLOUT CURRENTLY in NORTHERN WISCONSIN! We are getting calls on many loons on land and small ponds the past 2 days. A few loons can be a normal situation of a loon accidentally landing as a mistake however, due to the many calls received...

    ChatGPT

Very lovely. :) We could set it to music and premiere it at Oshkosh. I think the first verse would make a great chorus. My suggested title is "Judy's Wings".

    Explain plane spotting to me

My son did plane spotting in High School. He even met up with a bunch of guys from the UK at the LAX In-and-Out. He also sold a couple pictures to magazines for their front cover. Great hobby, meet up with nice people, have great conversations about planes, and occasionally get to meet with and...

    Who invented the VASI?

It get weirder. I asked for the patent name: What was the name of the patent? The patent filed by Paul C. Hays for the Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) system is titled "Glide Path Indicator" and was granted on September 30, 1958, as US Patent No. 2,854,644. The patent describes the...

    Who invented the VASI?

Hmm, my check with ChatGPT 3.5 gives the following: Carl Werner Runge, also known as Werner Runge, was a German physicist and mathematician who lived from 1880 to 1960. He was the son of Carl Runge, who was also a mathematician and physicist. Werner Runge did make significant contributions to...

    First time Oshkosh planning

I'm unable to take a bike since I usually fly in. A bike would be great if you want to get somewhere more quickly, but I get lots of great exercise by walking everywhere. I tend to lose weight at Oshkosh, even with beer and soft-serve ice cream as a major component of my Oshkosh diet. :D...
