Soybean or cornfield emergency landing debate

Unfortunately that was not an option for my cropduster friend. His airplane did fair better than the pictures. Good contributions to my post, thanks. And I did enjoy the puns! The frustrating reality about the insurance owning it after a mishap like this is the insurance company wants to...

Soybean or cornfield emergency landing debate

I have heard several pilots with concerns over having to land in a tall alfalfa field. I feel this would have less dire consequences than either corn or beans. Comments?

Soybean or cornfield emergency landing debate

Friend of mine has a nice cropduster, turbo prop. He had fuel contamination in August and had to put it down. His choices were a Nebraska cornfield that had a 7 foot high crop with ears on the plants or a soybean field that was about 3 feet tall. He felt that the soybeans having more of a...

My new engine is harder to start

I added a battery tender to the airplane (IO-540) which makes a big difference. Even though you may have a decent battery they will have more zip coming off of a bettery tender a few moments prior to starting. Reviewed our log book and the Concorde battery was last replaced in May of 2013, we...

How do I run power to detached garage?

Ron, You can believe what you want but I have had personal experience with aluminum wire buried underground that degraded and had to be replaced without being in the area of a termination point. Not all local codes require underground wiring to be inside conduit. And poly is better than...

How do I run power to detached garage?

Maybe notorius is too strong an adjective but aluminum wiring can fail more frequently when compared to copper in an underground application. What are the dangers of aluminum wiring? The biggest danger with aluminum wiring is that fire hazards occur from the oxidation and deterioration caused...

How do I run power to detached garage?

If you run the power underground use continuous polyethlene tube of at least 2" in diameter for conduit, most rodents can't get their mouths open enough to chew through anything 2" or larger. I like to use black poly as it is tough and can be purchased in rolls up to 300 feet long pretty...

    JPI EDM-900

I like our JPI system and would definitely buy one again. Only issue we have had is a Fuel Pressure probe that failed, and that is not much of a problem in a Cessna high wing where you routinely only use the boost pumps for starting. Fuel flow was still accurate without the pressure probe. We...

    GFC 500 servo issues

There was a previous discussion on this topic that listed the servo serial numbers involved. Have had no issues with ours.

How do you find the air to air frquency?

Has air to air always been 122.75? Seems like back in the 1960's we used 122.9. At that time the folks I flew with had 90 channel radios at best and some of them had coffee grinders. My first radio was a Narco VT2N with something like 9 or 10 transmit frequencies. It was barely one step...

    Sudden leg weakness

Can you stand on the balls of your feet with your heels elevated? And conversely can you stand on your heels with the balls of your feet held off the floor? And not suggesting balance issues but the strength in your feet/legs to do this. Try this one leg at a time with the other leg held off...

Bearing pointers on a G5 HSI with IFD 540 ?

Any advise for good You Tube videos on how to set the two Bearing Pointers on a G5 HSI? I understand how they work once set up just need to know how to use them with the Avidyne IFD 540 and define the stations or intersections desired to point them to? #2 Nav is a King.

Does Avidyne play with Garmin G5 and legacy AP?

We have an IFD540, two G-5's and a Garmin GFC 500 autopilot. Has been a couple of issues but would do it again. The RNAV approaches are off horizontally left by 200 feet sometimes on autopilot. I understand it has to do with the algorithm Avidyne uses versus Garmin's technique. ILS...

    University of Oklahoma Aviation?

As a judge for the National Intercollegiate Flying Association I have had the opportunity to follow several flying school programs. Google NIFA and look at the success of the school programs in the contests and that will reveal which programs have a good training environment. If I were you I...

    Tinnerman nuts

I received another suggestion with a similar technique only to use weed wacker string instead of safety wire. The suggestion was the OD of the string is close to the ID of the tinnerman nut and makes it easier to maintain control of the loose nut.
