I told the wife that I would never get a motorcycle...

One other thing - TAKE THE COURSE. When I got my first bike I worked weekends and the MSF course was always on weekends so I had to self teach and then go take the written test / get road permit / take riding test. The riding test is designed to be overly difficult, and this is coming from the...

I told the wife that I would never get a motorcycle...

I'd definitely take a look at the Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09. The Ninja 650 is a good choice. I rode one and I just never jived with it, but one of my friends girlfriends has one and she is quite a bit shorter than me and she is super comfy on it. So a lot of is comes down to how comfortable you...

I told the wife that I would never get a motorcycle...

How does the second paragraph go against the first two sentences? I made no contradictory points.

I told the wife that I would never get a motorcycle...

Get the bike. Riding is amazing, in a different way from driving a sports car or flying. Risk profile is very similar to GA, and like GA you have some power to manage the risk. Many fatal motorcycle crashes are single vehicle, and about half of motorcycle fatalities involve riders who were...

    Cool story from my grandpa

Hahaha that's awesome! And super cool about him flying in WWI! Do you know what kind of planes he flew there?

    Cool story from my grandpa

My grandpa is one of the big reasons I got into aviation. When I was little he would take me to a now-defunct air college outside of St. Louis (you can figure it out) to watch airplanes taking off and landing, or the same thing at Lambert (this was pre - 9/11). He was a newly-minted Avenger...

    Highway or Field?

My instructor always told me that a highway is a trap, because other things (power lines and street lights) often go with highways. You also have overhead signs and traffic to contend with. He always told me go for a nice, soft field, preferably planted. If not planted, but plowed, then land...

Cancelled my flight this morning due to personal minimums (aka risk mitigation)

So I've found that I really don't like flying IFR. When I passed my checkride back in December I thought it'd be a really useful rating. I still think that it's good to have and that it could be useful, but every time I've had a chance to actually use the cert, I've scrubbed. I just don't...

    Potato Guns

I've got a book called "Vegetable artillery for fun and for revolution." It has plans for a couple of different spudzookas using different fuels, a "gatling gun" that shoots 6 carrots at once, incendiary potatoes (use your imagination but it involves something that is "for motor fuel only") and...

    Flying with a cat?

My cat used to like car rides. After a bad vet visit, he now hates them, but he USED to like them!

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

Herd behavior. My finance professor once told us that two things govern all market interactions: greed and fear. Really, most human behavior can be distilled down to this, and we are prone to lemming behavior. I once read an article on why people drive like morons on the highway (staying in...

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

Sorry for going a bit off topic from the thread but wow that is a tough industry. My first year my statistical modeling class was divided up into groups and we were told to build models to predict fluctuations in natural gas prices. Turns out the reason was that a NG company in the midwest had...

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

Yeah, and that has to be handled at the retailer level.

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

Great question. I'd suspect that two things would be the focus. The first is greater agility. The second is greater visibility, which is a constant in SCM. This sort of plays into a phenomenon called the Bullwhip Effect, which is basically an amplification of demand variation as we move up...

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

I would view it as an anomaly. So the concepts behind it aren't terribly difficult. Basically, companies don't want to keep a TON of inventory on hand anymore. So what many companies work on is a semi - just in time system using what is known as "safety stock" to absorb minor fluctuations...

    COVID-19 Aftermath: What will change?

I'm a PhD Candidate / college instructor right now. I think that in some ways what you're saying is true, but there's another thing people don't often consider when it comes to online classes, and that is the actual possible classwork. For an obvious example, consider the physical sciences...

Advice Needed: DPE conflict of interest

If you're worried about it, and you seem like you are, I'd try to take the checkride elsewhere.

    Hang gliding?

I had no idea that you could get those kinds of distances out of them. I guess I'm very ignorant of it but I just assumed that it was more of a "local" type thing where you could launch and then maybe glide around for a couple minutes and get a few miles from your starting point!

    Hang gliding?

Thanks! Where I'm at we have some bluffs nearby close to the Mississippi River and I THINK guys occasionally hang glide off of there. After seeing the pictures in the magazine and watching a few videos I thought it looked like a lot of fun. Kind of like wingsuit flying but a bit less insane...
