Cleanest way to open oil filter

That tool cuts male (with nipple) filters just fine. The pin/bolt seats nicely in the nipple and the cutting wheel does its thing just above the bottom seam of the filter. Done so for the last 15 years

    Not leaning enough?

Dan thanks, I stand corrected on multiple fronts. Seems the UREM is a Tempest plug and REM is a Champion plug. And there is no 40 plug in the projected nose. You got me thinking about the melting point of metal lead, so had to do some reading. Sounds like the combustion process liberates lead...

    Not leaning enough?

Lycoming recommended shutdown procedure to "clean out unburnt fuel". To prevent fouling after shutdown? Some advocate, to get rid of the lead, run engine up to 2000ROM, lean aggressively for a minute or two and then shut down. Lead's melting point is 621dF, so once formed on the plugs, it's not...

    Reflective tape for Prop balancing

Thanks for the feedback Kenny and Bell206 I found this vendor. https://www.identi-tape.com/high-gain-sheeting.html 7610 good enough? Always the choices that is making it difficult :)

Sling Aircraft inching their way to Oshkosh, big brass ones.

Track their progress here. https://blog.slingaircraft.com/sling-high-wings-from-joburg-to-oshkosh-and-on/ Longest leg non stop was 2100 NM crossing the Atlantic, Cape Verde to Barbados. Some of it during the night! And here we stress, crossing the Big Lakes on our way to Oshkosh :-)

“single engine Cessna” down at Show Low (SOW)

I am trying to learn something here. How would I not miss an open exhaust valve? Rough running? Bigger mag drop? Not making maximum RPM? Run up at 1800 RPM wouldn't tell. CHT lower, EGT higher? Unlikely had the probes to tell. What else? Thanks

    Night Landing Tips

Approach. If you can see the RWY approach lights at all times, then you are likely high enough to miss trees and buildings. Antennae not so much. Power on approach. On final. Trim for approach speed with nose at the "round-out" attitude ( Vx times 1.2 ?) to have the nose wheel off, when the...

    Soot on spark plugs

Probably safer to do the leak down test with two people. Then it make sense to "burp" at the time of doing the test instead of rigging up the vacuum later on. Thread drift. Is it more dangerous to do a leak down test on a O-540 engine (80 psi) than a O-200 engine (80 psi) at TDC? Does the...

    Soot on spark plugs

Lots of food for thought in your and Dan's reply. Thanks. See . About 2:50 the "burp" is explained. In the video the fellow says 80 psi, but looking at the second dial, the indicated pressure seems to read 20 or so.

    Soot on spark plugs

What level of pressure can a leaf blower produce? Enough to reveal an induction leak. Versus "burping" with 80 PSI, during the annual leak down or differential test.

    Tail Stall Recovery

Horizontal stab is an "upside down" wing causing a down pressure in flight. Relative wind determines the AOA. Diagram suspect. Lets wait for the correct answer though :-)

    Pitch Change with Flaps

........causing a venturi effect (just like the curve on the top of the wing) that reduces lift........ Yep, the same Venturi that sucks the aircraft skywards (the curve on top of the wing is now facing the earth) when flying upside down. :-)

    Question on Constant Speed Propellers

Lean in the climb? Full rich on take off. (enough fuel flow for 100 to 125d F ROP for Best power plus 80 - 120d F for adequate cooling. This is a pre-requisite for leaning in the climb) On climb out, pick any cylinder and watch that EGT number. As you climb, it shall drop. Slowly and...
