    Garage build lessons learned/ideas

+1, even if you don't currently have a welder. Not long after I bought my welder I wondered how I ever got along without one. Tim

How to valuate a collection of airplanes

Tell your friend to stop being a cheapskate and hire a professional. Given the value of four (!) airplanes, the evaluation fee will be lost in the noise. Tim

    Cigarette lighter and ash trays

On my first airplane flight, about maybe 1963, airline meals came with a small pack (4-5) of cigarettes. Go figure. Tim

Alec Baldwin shoots and kills cinematographer.

That does not apply here; the gun involved in this shooting was a revolver. Guns with restricted barrels are gas-operated semi-automatic firearms. When firing blanks, the barrel needs a restriction so that enough pressure is developed to operate the action. A revolver barrel should NEVER have...

Alec Baldwin shoots and kills cinematographer.

That was the rule in my house ever since I was a little kid. When a gun is handed off, both parties check it first--I can't even imagine not doing this. If a gun is just sitting someplace, the action is open, and it was verified unloaded before setting it down. I suppose this is the...

    [NA]Mains voltage differential

If you have a neighbor on the same transformer, it might help to measure his voltages and compare to yours. Or, for that matter, have your voltages EVER measured the same? Tim

    Borescope cameras

I recently bought one of these to check rifle barrels: https://www.oasisscientific.com/store/p500/Vividia_GB-5100_USB_Digital_Gun_Barrel_Borescope_with_5mm_%280.20%22%29_Diameter_and_36%22_%2891_cm%29_Long_Semi-Rigid_Insertion_Tube.html I have been generally pleased with it, so for 80 bucks it...

    VOR navigation question

Seems like if you filed EXPECTING vectors, you'd put yourself into an impossible situation if you lost comms. Tim

Plane crashes into homes in San Diego, Ca

Here on Monterey Bay, it's mostly a summertime thing--locally called the "marine layer". Usually tops out at about 1500 feet and almost never goes all the way to the ground. It never goes far inland, so if a pilot has get-home-itis he can normally fly underneath it to the airport. Obviously...

    Thinking about becoming a pilot.

Kind of a bizarre question... I knew I was crazy about flying long before I ever took my first flight. Tim

    Is your mechanic tall enough?

Exactly. If I were the "engineer" charged with testing the hydraulics, I would personally check every pin before throwing any switches. Tim

First Army Aeroplane Flight, Fort Myer, Virginia 1909

Hard to believe that only thirty or so years later the propeller-driven airplane had been virtually perfected with the likes of the Mustang and Spitfire. Imagine being one of the spectators--I bet that before the demo many of them didn't even believe that flight was possible. Tim

FAA Safety Briefing: Exhaust System and increased fatalities

The one and only one time I've seen such an inspection done, the mechanic pressurized the system with low pressure air (as has been mentioned, with a leaf blower or vacuum cleaner outlet) and sprayed soapy water all over everything and looked for the telltale bubbles. Tim

    1965 wreckage found (maybe)

Why do you want to move here? I have lived in California for 67 years, and there is no way on God's green Earth I would move from America to this state. Tim

A beach with and airport code

Exactly. I wouldn't land at a place like that unless my life depended on it. If you kicked up some salt water spray, you would NEVER get all the salt out of the plane. Tim

    Cherokee 140 Intermittent Partial Power

Except for the sputtering, it sounds like a problem I had once with my 140. Muffler baffles had broken loose and were periodically blocking exhaust flow, causing intermittent power loss. Whack your muffler a few times and listen for loose metal inside. Tim
