How long does it take the NTSB?

There was an accident at Watsonville in July 2011, and the probable cause report is dated December 2013. I presume it took a long time because it was fatal. Tim

    Best $100 Burger

Maybe so, but Los Banos has the best burrito. Go across the street to the taqueria in the La Esperanza market. Then walk back to the airport and eat at the picnic table in the shade. Tim

FYI-Range of handheld is aboout 5 miles

Exactly. I live in the Santa Cruz mountains and once talked to a guy on a mountaintop at Big Sur using a 2m handheld with rubber duck--about 60 miles straightline distance. He had exactly the same rig. Tim

    Good Value Planes?

The plane in the Trade-a-Plane ad may or may not be a good idea, but in general I have found my Cherokee 140 to be a good value. That is, for a pilot who doesn't care if he goes fast. Simple, easy to fly. Counting hangar, maintenance, insurance, fuel, etc., I probably spend 500-600 bucks a...

Plane seems to have lost some of its power

This happened to me. Subtle power loss ultimately found to be caused by baffles breaking loose inside the muffler, causing flow restriction. Preflight check now includes whacking the muffler to listen for rattles. Tim

    Can't See Fuel on Dipstick!

I made a stick for my Cherokee 140 that is exactly twice the required length (and it's still only a foot or so long). Anyway, it works no matter which end I stick in there, and being long, it is very hard to drop into the tank. Tim

California tax: aircraft use in first six months

Thanks--I feel much better now. :D Anyway, you're right; they call it a possessory interest tax, whatever that means. I just call it a cheap shot. I do pay a separate tax on the plane itself. Tim

California tax: aircraft use in first six months

The sales tax is one-time. However, some counties or municipalities will charge yearly property taxes. Just because they can, I guess--after all, if you own an airplane you must be rich. I even pay property tax on my hangar, which is owned by the city of Watsonville. Tim

    Another ADS-B Question

Mammoth elevation: 7800 ft Truckee elevation: 5817 ft Lake Almanor elevation: 4505 ft I have flown to mountain destinations and not had to go anywhere near 10k feet, but then I AM quite arrogant. Tim

    Another ADS-B Question

I don't know about the other states, but you can take California off your list. It's very easy to fly here without going over 10k feet. In fact, in 16 years of flying I have only done it once, and that was just to see how high I could go. Tim
