What single engine trainer to buy?

It's been a couple decades since I was a student pilot, but my take is that the 172 would be a better choice. The following is my experience (take it for what it's worth)... The only experience I have with a Cherokee is with an Arrow. And the club sold that several years ago. The 172 has the...

How many hours did you fly in 2023?

    Nowhere near enough!

Cessna 150 or 152, which would you rather have?

I would vote for neither. A C-172 at a minimum. For me it is a very simple reason. With the 150 (and I assume the 152) I had a problem with going for the brakes. I would run the seat all the way back (long legs) and would still hit the bottom of the panel with my knees with I'd go for the...

long term effects of being an airline pilot

Or, you can be too old (like me) to even consider the career. The FAA mandated cutoff (mandatory retirement age) is in my rear-view mirror. BTW, retirement is the best job I've ever had.

[NA] Starlink has built-in Firewall “

Your signature line basically says that ALL gun laws are unconstitutional as they are designed to infringe on our rights. Right on! Back to our original discussion...

    MSWord problem solved, but . . .

Microsoft makes changes to products because they like them. It used to drive me nuts when I used their products and knew exactly how to do something. Then they changed the user interface and put what I knew someplace else. Oh, and you got NO documentation with the new version, so good luck...

    [NA] Shielded Cat VI cable

An interesting aside... In the US (and other places), unshielded Cat 5 cable is the norm. In Germany shielded Cat 5 cable was legally required. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. But we had to test (EMC testing) with both to make sure our products were compliant with EMC requirements with...

NA why do people bag leaves and throw them away?

When I had a lawn, it was just large enough to fill one catcher bag when I mowed it. Over 15 years ago we re-landscaped and one of the things we did was eliminate the lawn. I don't even own a lawn mower anymore. :) I do rake up the leaves from a couple of the trees as they would choke out...

There is no way I would add a tip. None.

RWY closed except over 12500 lbs.

Bummer. I've been retired from Intel for over 8 years, but that shuttle service was great. We ran ERJ-135s for years, and a Beach 1900 from KOLM to KHIO.

    ORD remains the worst

The folks yell at you in their version of English, so I'd make the signs in English. With arrows pointing in the direction the text says to go.

    Winter flying and icing

Amen to that! A variable pitch prop doesn't help at all. The two times I've picked up ice (and it has been years) were in a 182. Also, the one time I've had to add carb heat to melt carb ice were in that 182, as well. Difference flights.

    ANA is nastay

Interesting about Singapore and EVA. It's been decades since I rode either of them and business class on both was great. I only rode Cathay in coach and it wasn't bad at all. But, that also was a couple decades ago.

    Endorsement

You'll need the high-performance endorsement for the 180, 182 and 208. They all have more than 200 hp. And if it is a tail dragger, you'll need that endorsement, as well. This assumes, of course, that you hadn't logged time in a high-perf or tail dragger before a certain date before my check...

    ANA is nastay

Back in the 2nd half of the 1990s Intel routinely bought us business class seats on trans-Pacific flights. That went away during the market decline in 2000 as a cost savings measure, one we never got back. Trans-Atlantic flights were always coach. Business class seats were only slightly more...

How would you assess and respond to partial power loss in cruise flight?

I've had this happen once in over 20 years. Adding carb heat solved the problem. A little ice in the carburetor caused the loss of power and adding some heat solved the problem. If it hadn't then we probably would have declared an emergency and dealt with it that way.

Hit my first (and hopefully last) bird

I hit a bird prior to my first solo (decades ago) and haven't hit one since. Local bird and he zigged when he should have zagged. Got hit with the prop. We landed, found no damage to the airplane and I went off to solo. That airplane is flying to this day.

Maryland - Aerial Jettison of Cremated Remains (over water)

Sorry to hear of your loss. A couple decades ago we (my CFI and I) dropped his mothers (?) ashes from a 182. We utilized a plastic pipe that was placed out the passenger door. Poured the ashes through the pipe. As I recall, it worked well.
