Another legality question - this time, towpilots

FWIW (less than two cents), my two pennies. If you read (g) by itself, what does it allow? (g) A private pilot who meets the requirements of 61.69 may act as a pilot in command of an aircraft towing a glider or unpowered ultralight vehicle. But if the PP is in compliance with 61.69, they...

    Clear Radio Communications Increase Safety

Correct. It's just something that makes _me_ smile when I don't have to ask. In fact, I'd rather hear that you were at 2K feet, then 5 miles out. 5 miles out to a pilot w/out GPS can be anywhere from 2 to 20. Altitude - most can read their altimeter. Again, I'm not saying you are...

    Clear Radio Communications Increase Safety

Something I really appreciate on the ~5 mile out call is the altitude. I'm often in a 5mile ring around the airport towing up gliders, and it is nice to know if the other guy is at 3K descending, or is already at PA. Tim

    Dan Gryder Arrested!

Well, it did seem POA was pretty quick to throw Dan Gryder under the bus, and when the other side of the story came along - pretty quick to discount that. I don't know any of the parties involved, but have seen enough of small town politics to be able to keep an open mind about what another...

Preheat or not? First frost last night.

I have successfully used a 5lb propane tank (sitting outside on a slab of ice) to supply fuel to a 18k btu heater on many a 20 below zero(F) night. A 10lb'er is not going to have a problem supplying fuel to a Red Dragon type pre-heater. Tim

    Ethanol Free MOGAS

I'll bet that ethylene glycol with methyl violet as the coloring agent will give you results quite close to the "quik-test" kit. Tim

    2009 6Y9 Attendee List

Sorry guys, I'm out too. I have houseguests that were planning on leaving by Friday, now they are staying 'till Monday. If anyone is flying near KOEO on Sunday, and you hear "Cub 83B w/ glider in tow" on 122.9, say hello. Tim

    Forced Landing

I saw a pilot who suffered a loss of power at low altitude manage to not stall it, identify a landing area, and put it down without injury and little damage to the airframe. He also seems to be a guy who appreciates the aircraft he owns, and the beauty of a calm night with a setting sun. He...

    Ethanol Alcohol Fuel Test

The quick-check stuff doesn't change color - take a look at this website selling it. http://www.fuel-testers.com/quikcheck.html If no ethanol, blue drops sink to bottom. If ethanol present, sample turns blue - blue drops dissolve into the etoh. Tim

I don't KNOW, having never seen or used it. But after a quick glance at their webpage, it could just be a water soluble blue dye. Tim

Do All Men Have Wondering Eyes?

That's a nice behind.... Er, what was the question? Seriously though, you have got to be kidding. If your daughter has an attractive figure, and wears something to accentuate it, people may look appreciatively. It seems as if the question was simply to stir the Obama pot (take it to...

Crosswind takeoff on floats...um, not really

Not sure it is overgross... I sat right there and watched takeoffs last summer. I don't know that he was overgross, and I can understand that a gust or crosswind caused it. The two lakes are joined by that channel, and often their takeoff "roll" went right down part of the channel. Tim...

    The point?

I was reading an older issue of Flying this weekend, and in an article about the new Cessna Citation whatever, the schnoz was talked about. In the article, they spoke about having significant icing issues if the nose was not round enough and it got too pointy. Here it is, page 40 of April '09's...

    $30,000 plane....

I already suggested an RV-4. Close enough to an RV-3 for him due to his size. OF COURSE a C172 or PA28 variant is gonna be do what he wants to do with the least problems. One could have answered that in the second post and then simply locked the thread. But what kind of fun is it to spend...

Uggh Hard Drive Crash!! Legal Interpretation "Compensation" Lost....

And in regards to that decision and glider towing, I'm copying and pasting from another poster, another board. <snip>your interpretation is from 1990 and 61.113 was updated in 2004 to allow a private pilot tow gliders for compensation or hire. Quote: Sec. 61.113 Private pilot privileges...
