    Helene relief flights

Would be ideal if we could make "clear off your local runway/airport as soon as possible" a big and public part of any disaster relief plan. Not only would it maximize the number of locations for supplies and personnel to arrive, but it would drive home the importance of communities having an...

Flight simmers - help me understand the market for super-realistic airplane models

I'm a dilettante simmer, mostly to screw around practicing procedural/instrument flying or do wildly stupid/illegal stuff which I could never do (more than once) in real life. I will say that MSFS has VFR fidelity now to the point that I think it's genuinely useful to test-fly an unfamiliar...

    shade tree engine mount repair

Sort of begs the question as to what kind of annual was done during the seven years of grunge accumulation.

Breaking in engine (another logging question)

It probably put him at some financial risk since it's doubtful you met the insurance clause for additional pilots (which usually require time in type), but I can't imagine why anyone at an airline would care at all.

Skew-T diagrams removed because blind people can’t see them

This one looks reasonable: https://madis-data.ncep.noaa.gov/MadisAircraftPublic/ And yes, fantastically stupid decision.

    Aviation Etiquette

I hate, hate, hate the way tipping culture has grown, and I say that as a guy who has worked as a bartender, server, and an FBO line guy. My advice that that tipping is absolutely not expected at any FBO (and would be a little weird in most contexts) but if you feel the line guy went above and...

Aircraft for Sale doesn't show the Plane Price estimate anymore?

It's been a few months since I looked at the site, but it seems that Flying's Aircraft for Sale site doesn't show its price range estimate anymore. Weird, since they had splashy articles about it in January of this year. I wonder if they got too many complaints about people overvaluing aircraft...

Darren Pleasance replacing Mark Baker Jan 1.

I'm a life member for two reasons: it's better to have any voice in DC than no voice at all; and the air safety institute. Their podcasts are also excellent. I'll be interested to see how the new president runs things. I do think that AOPA is overall a very positive asset for our community...

Darren Pleasance replacing Mark Baker Jan 1.

Meh, pretty sure that "conspired" refers to the surprise, not the sweepstakes results. Aviation is a pretty small community, so perhaps just a coincidence that Pleasance knew the winner. Not a great look for the incoming AOPA president, I agree, but I'm not quite ready to get any pitchforks out...

Cheapest way to build retract time

Owning an airplane is rarely (never?) the cheapest option. It's definitely the most convenient option for availability, but I fear you're falling into the trap that so many of us have: trying to logic and math your way into what is ultimately an emotional decision. There are no cheap airplanes...

Is there a website data base of airfields that have T hangars available?

Pull a blank piece of paper out of your printer. Stare at it. That's a fairly accurate list of places with available hangars at the moment. Probably better to figure out the "everything else" for wherever you want to live, and then bite the bullet to get on the hangar list at the closest airport.

    Planes and hurricanes

Unfortunately, I've encountered a fair number of places which won't let you sign up for a hangar unless you already have a plane. My poor plane is going to be outside for the first time in a long time because the local waiting lists are years long and I had to move here. I'm thinking of starting...

Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

I have a PA-28-180, so the first NRPM doesn't apply to my plane. Hurrah! The second one had me riled up until I noted that the applicability section says that it only applies if the wing-spar hits 12,000 service hours OR the aircraft has incomplete maintenance logs. I have complete logs, so...

    Planes and hurricanes

My policy is through Old Republic and has the above clause. Basically, you're covered for up to $1000 of expenses per year. Sounds like Hang 4 has the same policy. In Pensacola, the local aero clubs (and military, for that matter) generally hangared what they could and then flew the rest out...

Elon does not read this forum, apparently

As an active servicemember, I will go so far as to say that efficiency and resiliency are usually opposing forces, and the drive to make our military efficient (things such as just-in-time logistics, minimum manning, and increasing use of contractors/civilian sources) have caused significant...

How much CO is too much?

Yeah, I'd have someone take another look at your exhaust system. My plane was purchased with a relatively recent new exhaust system installed. I noticed that I was feeling unusually fatigued after flying but the little dot on the sticky CO detector looked OK (obviously not a precise...
