    Take off engine-out options diagram

You might want to shade the river yellow. Ditching may be a better option than hitting a building, but it's not a good option. Sometimes, and at certain times of day, wide streets make OK options. Better than the river at least.

Getting near the end of training, trying to work out a few bugs.

You're not QUITE proficient in all the gadgets, and you're still fixating on them during the transition to approach. With proficiency, they don't take that much brain power. Whatever you can do ahead of time to lighten the workload will help disproportionately. Load (but don't activate) the...

FF vs. FltPlan for Instrument Rating?

FltPlan has some interface design issues, but it works fine. Better than the new FF NAV log (it took me 30 seconds to find a serious bug -- it gratuitously added 1000 miles to a trip from KRHV to KRNO and told me it would take over 11 hours; a more reasonable estimate is 1.5). So does just...

Teardrop Entry - Doesn't Make Sense?

What's a worst case wind? If I'm flying in a 200 knot jet stream and I can only go 100 knots, I'm not staying in the protected airspace in a hold no matter what entry I choose.

It's Official: Started PPL training today! Learning in our 182

The oil filter only leaked when the engine was running, so it made the bottom of the airplane greasy. Like all oil leaks. There was no way to tell where it was coming from from the outside.

It's Official: Started PPL training today! Learning in our 182

For the time when I picked up the 182 from the mechanic with a cracked oil filter, one of those borescopes might have been nice. As it was, we noticed increased oil loss, which the mechanic insisted was "still in spec." We knew it had changed, so we brought it into a different mechanic, who...

    I'm officially an instrument student!

You're right; other parts have BETTER emergency landing spots, with or without instrument approaches. The Bay is hardly unique with airports less than 10 miles apart. I see that MORE frequently, not less, away from urban centers. In urban environments, small airports are much more valuable as...

    DinoCirrus vs. Steam Injected Cessna

How about airframe lifetime? 182s last essentially forever. Isn't the SR22 composite and lifetime limited? Electronics also has a tendency to obsolesce far faster than analogs.

Teardrop Entry - Doesn't Make Sense?

I disagree. You have lots of protected airspace in that direction, and if you KNOW the wind is howling, you can compensate. The counter-argument is that, the teardrop gives you much more time on the inbound leg, with positive guidance, than the parallel entry. This is particularly important...

    Changing my home base

Class C is defined by service, not operations (at least, not entirely). KVNY and KLGB are both Class D, but see a whole hell of a lot more traffic than KMRY or even KOAK, which are Class C. And it's a whole lot harder to get out of KSQL than KOAK. And the comparison YOU made was towered vs...

Ever fly with plane overloaded? Experiences?

Umm, that's obvious. Zeppelins would not work if helium gasbags didn't make them lighter. Quite different from the bird question.

    Changing my home base

Drop by the office and ask them where they drop. Avoid it. You'll probably find it's on the non-pattern side of the airport. And of course listen on the radio for when they really drop.

    Oil gurus...

I'm not a fan of the more recent reduced phosphate ("for gasoline engines") oils in older vehicles with sliding camshafts, but for a recent vehicle, 0W-20 SN is 0W-20 SN. That's the point of having the specs. The 0W has very little to do with mileage; it's a cold temperature spec. You'll only...

I may have ruined GA experience for a friend of mine

Yeah, at your stage, conditions for good training, and conditions for taking up a first timer, are almost mutually exclusive. Wait until you have your certificate, and that will change.

    I never fail anything...until today

This is a rationalization. Choosing between options happens every flight. And knowing an out of place reading can save your bacon, whether in navigational, engine, or six-pack instruments. They sometimes lie without "flagging" or faulting. For your VOR check, the procedure isn't the issue, so...

It's Official: Started PPL training today! Learning in our 182

I've watched an experienced A&P install a cowling on a 182 in 30 seconds flat. PA28 engine doors sound like a great idea until you take a good look at the latches. Most of them have cracks that have been stop drilled and doubled.
