    Reno next week

I'm day-tripping out to Reno next week, winds permitting. Where is a good place to park a 182 for 3-4 hours? If afternoon winds or density altitude over the Sierra are too nasty, it may turn into an overnight. I'd prefer not to add fuel; the 182 can hold enough for two round trips and...

Can you legally fly a 1981 Cessna with the beacon missing?

The Cessna 172P POH equipment list has strobes as a line item. It's a "-A," which means optional equipment in addition to required items. See http://ilwg.cap.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/C172P_IM-82.pdf p. 6-18. I've certainly seen 172 N and P models both with and without strobes.

Can you legally fly a 1981 Cessna with the beacon missing?

I've never seen a POH that describes strobes and beacons as the same line item. Not even the 2012 182T I fly regularly. THAT one is real interesting. The KOEL requires strobes for all operations, and requires the LED beacon for nothing.

    Faulty transponder on club aircraft

Actually it does unless the transponder is disabled or removed, AND placarded inop. In this case, it must also be logged by an A&P ( transponders aren't allowed as preventive maintenance). See 14 CFR 91.209(d).

Is this a red flag when looking for a flight school?

Later model Cessna singles are like this. Strobes are required by the "Kinds of Operation Equipment List" but the beacon is not. Even more curiously, in the 70s and 80s, both were considered "additional" per the equipment list.

Is this a red flag when looking for a flight school?

It's legit if the aircraft is equipped with strobes. If there is more than one anticollision lighting system, 91.209 only requires one to be lit. Same deal with 91.205 (as long as it's red or white, but I don't think I've ever seen airplane strobes that aren't white). It IS, however, required...

    Faulty transponder on club aircraft

It's 1 inch per thousand feet. That's pretty simple math. No calculator required.

    G1000 Question - Beeping Noise

It's the AP only if it started as you hit the disconnect button. That's in the runup, not engine start checklist. There is another really annoying noise when the PFD comes up with the MFD off or still initializing. Several redundant systems are not available, yielding a PFD alert. If you follow...

    Faulty transponder on club aircraft

If you're on flight following and the error is 200 feet or more, you'll very likely find out you have a problem. "Cessna 123XY maintain VFR cruise altitude." Or they may just ask you your altitude. Or you will hear yourself as a traffic call to someone else, with the wrong altitude. I found...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

It's pretty natural, but keeping the nose up really helps you slow down, and it's much easier on the the nosegear. Cessnas are draggy as hell with the flaps hanging out AND the nose off the ground. I can often slow to taxi speed on a calm day on my home 2300 foot runway without even touching...

    Need to share the cost?

Isn't this obvious? The renter would act as PIC. Which might be a problem if he's not instrument rated and he needs a clearance. But FBO and insurance rules don't affect legality. It would be perfectly legal for a commercial pilot to act as PIC for free, as long as he's rated in category and...

What model type of the Cessna 182 do you consider the "Sweet Spot" to purchase.

It's a function of weight. There is enough variation for it to matter. Near max landing weight, 70 KIAS works better. I usually target 500 FPM. There is nothing wrong with dragging it in as long as you aren't continually adding power (that means you're behind the power curve, and adding...

What model type of the Cessna 182 do you consider the "Sweet Spot" to purchase.

I won't do much more than trim it hands off at 65 KIAS and full flap just after turning final. The thing people seem to skip is that you usually do need to adjust trim as you let out the flap.

Electroair electronic ignition to replace one mag

Yup. There are lots of ways to screw up timing advance, and the sensors have no redundancy, so you don't know. Not having a knock sensor is an error; the real strength is in advancing timing to, but not over, the detonation limit.

What model type of the Cessna 182 do you consider the "Sweet Spot" to purchase.

You forget they hold a LOT of fuel. If you run it for max range (i.e., slow! -- 100 KTAS) and you have long range tanks, you can get it over 1000 miles with a 45 minute reserve per the performance tables. 10 hours is a whole hell of a lot of flying without a break, though. I don't usually fly...

What model type of the Cessna 182 do you consider the "Sweet Spot" to purchase.

The sight picture on the T model seems a bit different from the others. Not hugely so, though. I think it's just that the seats don't go as high.

Generally over the fence. Later if there is a long displaced threshold.
