Help Me Learn From This...PFD Failure

BOTH comms and both navs? It's rather important. A false screenshot leads to false conclusions.

Help Me Learn From This...PFD Failure

If it's not, the aircraft is not airworthy per 91.205, for any operation.

    recovering from inverted flight

Not correct. A properly executed barrel roll is a 1G maneuver. There is a well known video of Bob Hoover performing one, as an unspilled glass of water rests on his glare shield. That's not possible with negative G's.

New club, new airport, new controllers

I had one outfit insist on a checkout for a 172SP separately from a 172N, even after I rattled off the differences from memory. I declined. They also wanted a new 182 checkout for lack of currency even with hundreds of hours of other 182 time in the logbook. Just not 182Q time. They can bite me.

    Reno next week

DA of 8000 isn't a problem with long runways, as long as it isn't windy. I'll be in an older 182 with a service ceiling of 17700. The TFRs were around Friday, but seem to have disappeared. The big question is how to get into Atlantic with all the taxiway closure NOTAMs.

Help Me Learn From This...PFD Failure

Yes, every airworthy plane has a mag compass per 91.205. Does the 162 have dual AHRS, or are they just not available as IFR platforms?

    Reno next week

You don't. The poster I was responding to was spouting nonsense. And apparently deleted his post. The only VFR clearances you get in Class C are those you get at any other towered airport (taxi, landing, etc.).

Help Me Learn From This...PFD Failure

In a 172, yes. AI, ASI and altimeter. All the engine instruments are in the MFD, so it's a land as soon as practicable situation even in VMC if the electrical system screws up this bad. But I doubt it did for real, since the OP described a reversionary mode that doesn't exist.

    Losing one's confidence

Why wait for your next flight review? Go up TOMORROW with an instructor and address the fear problem. Fear doesn't get better with age.

Help Me Learn From This...PFD Failure

ALL of the busses are affected. I'd suspect an incorrect system voltage or something equivalently evil. It's obviously not airworthy. But the screenshot is a sim. The OP should know what he did to it.

    recovering from inverted flight

Only if you're straight and level while inverted. That would seem rather unlikely under the circumstances given.

    Where should I fly next :) ?

Go to LA. Lots of good airports (like Big Bear or Catalina) and it isn't so FN hot.

    Scared of my instructor

Well, for one thing, her screen name is German for "a female pilot."

    TFR starts at 4000' AGL?

Firefighting TFRs say so. This one is security, and is mostly enclosed in restricted airspace owned by US Army Intelligence.

    TFR starts at 4000' AGL?

    Flight testing outside restricted/warning airspace?

It's Official: Started PPL training today! Learning in our 182

Don't think of it as pulling the nose up. Think of it as staying level while you slow down. The nose will go up as a byproduct.

    Would you have declared?

Yes, the aircraft is unairworthy if any of the airworthiness equipment fails in flight. It's even unairworthy if your INOP sticker falls off the autopilot you're not using (unless you replace it right away). Yes, there are aircraft with no electrical systems. If they were certificated that...

    Would you have declared?

Actually, a "pan pan" IS an emergency. It's an "urgency" condition per the FAA, not a "distress" condition. Both are emergencies. It DOES allow you to break Part 91 FARs per 91.3(b) if necessary to service the emergency.

    Would you have declared?

There is a BIG difference between an alternator not working and smoke, even if they are both present. 20 minutes away with a burning smell is a truly awful idea.

Can you legally fly a 1981 Cessna with the beacon missing?

Nope. Operational fuel gauges for each tank are explicitly required by 91.205 for all flight operations.
