Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Someone else suggested something similar to me - sell the engine, avionics etc and donate the fuselage to an A&P school.

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Hi all. OP here. The feedback has been incredible, and I thought it might be worth taking stock of the input and summarizing some of the major points. 1) First of all, thanks to everyone who has commented. The aviation community is amazing, whether it's on the ramp at the airport or in a...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I was actually fine with how my mechanic did the 'annual'. Very early on in his inspection, he found some discrepancies, including ADs that had been signed off previously but clearly hadn't been done, and evidence of corrosion he was worried about. He asked me to come to his hangar so he could...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Thanks for the comments and the suggestions. Good idea. In my case, I found my plane first and then a local mechanic. I’ll definitely consider this in the future, but at this point I’m not sure plane ownersip is for me...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

thanks. I’m truly grateful it didn’t end up in a catastrophe. My mechanic has been working on Pipers for more than 3 decades and teaches at an A&P school, and I have complete confidence in him. I was lucky that someone recommended him to me when I bought my plane.

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

That's exactly the first question I asked my mechanic. It wasn't that difficult to spot. And at least four A&Ps had worked on or examined this plane since 2017 before mine looked at it.

Tennessee for about two years before I bought it, Florida before that (~2 years) and NY before that.

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Apologies, that was a typo. My mechanic was never associated with the plane. The plane came from Tennessee and my mechanic is based in Massachusetts. After he found the initial evidence of corrosion, he asked me if he could continue to pull panels/remove the vertical stabilizer to inspect...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I got an Aerospace report on the plane before buying it - accident reports, registration background, liens etc. Everything looked fine. As for the pre-buy, I asked him to do a typical assessment but didn't spell out what to look for. I didn't feel I had the knowledge to spell out what needed...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

A separate A&P did my pre-buy. He was never previously associated with the plane. I think the A&P owner (guy who did the interior and paint) sold it to the guy I bought it from. That guy supposedly had done an extensive pre-buy before purchasing it. While he owned it, he had an annual done...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I'm definitely interested in hearing options. One of them is scrapping the plane, hence the call to the salvage shops to see what it might be worth, but I haven't made any decisions. The feedback from the forum has been very helpful, and I'm all ears.

He spotted the tail corrosion during the inspection and asked me if it was OK if he checked it out further because he was concerned. I agreed.

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

He saw corrosion at the tail by shining his flashlight down the back on the inside, and became suspicious. He then removed the vertical stabilizer and saw significant corrosion in both the fin and the fuselage at the back of the plane. Now he was very concerned since he saw some mild corrosion...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Thanks. My worst nightmare is it disintegrating mid flight, and I'm very grateful that didn't happen. But yeah.

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

The previous owner told me he was worried that the wing-spar AD would be applicable to the plane, so he got the eddy current inspection done as a part of his pre-buy. He reckons the shop never put back all the bolts after the eddy current
