Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I was pretty disillusioned by the whole thing - I was very close to giving up on plane ownership and was even wondering if I should continue to fly at all. It wasn't at all clear how I could confidently buy a plane in the future, even if I wanted to. I got very lucky that my A&P - who I have...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I wish the Cherokee 160 didn't happen, but hoping for better luck with the Archer! Here's a photo...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I started this thread asking for advice. I recently reread all of the input and am very grateful for all the advice (and sympathy) that I got. It certainly helped with my decisions over the last 6 months. For legal reasons I am not able to go into details, but I did want to provide an update...

    Rusty Pilot

I got back into flying in 2019 after a 20 year gap. My goal was not just to regain enough proficiency to fly adequately, but to be as comfortable as I was shortly after getting my PPL. I used the Sporty's private pilot course and found this to be very helpful, and went through it a couple of...

    Doubt on Arrow III

Appreciate that. I am 'this guy' from the other thread. I've had several months to reflect on the situation and think if there was anything different I could have done to avoid this debacle. The fact is that four different A&P/IAs had signed off on this plane since 2017, yet I ended up with...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

It's still in the hands of my lawyer, but there's some progress. Hope to be able to provide a bit more of an update soon. Thanks for checking in.

    Dangerous Text Message?

There was an article a couple of years ago on this topic: https://www.wired.com/story/imessage-interactionless-hacks-google-project-zero/ I assume the bug has been well addressed by now

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I'm pretty sure I don't have the skills for this. I think the majority of the work will require sheet metal and structural experience, and I have zero knowledge here. Perhaps more importantly, I don't think it would be a challenge I'd enjoy since I'd view every hour that I'd need to work on it...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

A quick update - First, I'd like to express my appreciation again for all the input and advice, both on the forum and through private messages. Unfortunately my hope that people would do the right thing was unfounded. I tried to contact the relevant parties - the seller, my pre-buy mechanic...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

This is exactly my dilemma. I am going to the hangar this afternoon and will walk through everything with my mechanic, and will discuss the options people have suggested (repair, swapping out the fuselage, parting out etc).

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I appreciate the sentiments and all the input I have been getting. Although there are many conflicting suggestions, I'm taking in all the advice offered and working on next steps. I'll head down to my mechanic's hangar tomorrow to take more photos and talk through some of the suggestions and...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I didn't ask them and they didn't mention it, so I don't know. From what I recall, they said there is significant corrosion in the vertical stabilizer, rear fuselage/bulkhead, ribs and stringers near in the baggage area, and under the front seats (seat rails)

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Unfortunately it looks like the plane really is in that bad a shape. A second AP/IA from a different shop has now looked over the plane and agrees with the assessment of my mechanic.

Maybe at some point an emotional win will feel good, but at this point I'm much more interested in getting my money back!

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Thank you Adam. A fellow POA member who is an attorney kindly reached out to me and is offering some advice, which is very much appreciated. One question I have is whether to try a personal communication from me with the previous owner, pre-buy A&P, and previous APIAs who signed off on the...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

I'm not sure what you're implying here. There isn't another 'side' to this. It's pretty straightforward - I brought my plane in for an annual, my mechanic found multiple discrepancies including evidence of corrosion which he showed me, asked my permission to assess the damage further which I...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

Yes, same plane as on Piper Forum. I thought about the scenario you mentioned but I don't think it's viable for me - I'm pretty sure I don't have the skills (nor time) to take on a project like this and I don't have a hangar to work in. And I could see the bills racking up pretty quickly if I...

Disastrous First (and Last) Annual - Advice Needed

That was definitely a concern that my mechanic and I had, but the engine seems to the best part of the airplane. It has had several oil analyses since overhaul and they all were fine, oil filter check and compression check two weeks ago were also fine, and the engine ran great when the plane...
