    Synthetic Vision

    Why is that?

    Synthetic Vision

Absolutely! So long as you don't consider it enhanced vision for descent below DA/MDA and for landing when you can't see the runway.

Garmin 430W and remaining in hold

Somewhere around that time. Remember, Garmin offered to upgrade the pre-WAAS 400/500/430/530 to WAAS for $1,500 once WAAS was operational. Turns out the FAA tightened the WAAS timing requirements, so Garmin basically had to replace the entire electronics for $1,500. And, they made good on that.

Garmin 430W and remaining in hold

Seems like a prime rule for the 400W/500W series is to understand that DA is not the box's MAP. Garmin got smarter as they moved beyond the 400W/500Wseries. Perhaps the 480 is smarter (not developed by Garmin). I've always heard its fan club say it is better then the 400W/500W boxes.

    Synthetic Vision

That's what it is for. It's not for landing or takeoff when you can't see the runway. Enhanced vision might work, but that is a heavy iron gadget.

    “GPS required for TAA”

It would be on an RNAV TAA IAP. But, this is an ILS IAP, which typically doesn't require GPS.

    “GPS required for TAA”

The FAA calls them areas. In this case there is a straight-in area and a course-reversal area. TAA's lost much of their value when the T legs were greatly reduced by a policy change on minimum T leg length. This particular one is of questionable value.

Lost Comms clarification from you professionals?

True for a jet. But, piston airliners were permitted to file VFR. That's history now.

"Cancel my ATP, I'll fly PSA." It's unbelievable how they violated clearance of cloud regs to get into KBUR "VFR." This was when they were flying Lockheed Electras that could be operated on a VFR flight plan. Saw it personally several times in my early light airplane days. When they became a...

Lost Comms clarification from you professionals?

It's not going to happen to an airliner. Too much redundancy. But, let's say it did for sake of discussion. His/her Ops Specs has a list of authorized regular, refueling/provisional, and alternate airports. He/she should land at the nearest authorized regular airport, not at Weed Patch...

    Best Instrument Checkride Questions

The MAP for an ILS is the DA. For the LOC minimums it is the charted MAP. They are constructed differently in TERPs. There are a few vertical guided procedures around the country that have only a DA. Those have no charted MAP. The most dramatic example is Beckwourth, California O02.

Practice locations for low-altitude maneuvers for the private and commercial? Santa Fe dam works well for KEMT and KPOC, and perhaps KCNO. When I trained there eons ago Santa Fe dam was ours to practice. Fast forward to today and Santa Fe dam has two advisory frequencies.

    Heading or Radial after VOR?

I'd rather be the Hitchcock of YouTube. Feature airplane crashes. I'll start with the clown who bailed out of his perfectly good Taylorcraft. I'll call him Norman Bates, Jr.

KHAF ( Half Moon Day ) IFR Departure

Guess not, since Runway 30 ODP is in the FAA "pipeline." I believe it was about lack of radar before NCT got fusion.
