Inadvertently flew VFR into bad IMC today, never again

My understanding of the latency inherent in ADS-B/Nexrad is as such: The excessive time delay isn't due to network latency. That would be measured in milliseconds or maybe seconds on a very slow network. The delay comes from the data being subject to human analysis. Easy to see how that...

Inadvertently flew VFR into bad IMC today, never again

Thanks for sharing. The vast majority of VFR pilots don't realize how much EVERYTHING changes when you pop into a cloud. After the ~3hours of instrument reference we do in private training, in clear VMC and an instructor tugging on your shirt, it's easy to take the instruments for granted when...

Keep up proficiency, not just currency!

I did not turn it off(G1000), though I did my best to treat it like any ol' steam gauge HSI. I, like most others I think, tend to get complacent with having the super convenient moving map giving them peace of mind. The confirmation bias sneaks in and we convince ourselves that we rely on the...

Keep up proficiency, not just currency!

Just a reminder to all (especially newer) instrument rated pilots not to be lulled into ticking off easy approaches just to be legal to file IFR. I went up today to shoot a couple approaches, and decided to try a VOR approach(not the one I posted about yesterday) since I honestly hadn't done...

    HI-VOR approach in a 172?

That makes "duh" sense to me now, when you put it like that. I've just always been vectored to final either outside or direct the last fix before FAF. That's the impression I've always had. I'm totally cool with higher published mins being that it's just a practice approach for fun.

    HI-VOR approach in a 172?

There are no obstacles of concern to my knowledge, but that was another consideration I had. Even if I rip down final at 120+, I'd be going missed at 85. Doesn't seem like an issue to me given no obstacles, but its not a situation i've ever encountered.

    HI-VOR approach in a 172?

I suppose I could do that, really shouldn't have any problems slowing it up with 1.5nm to go at mins. A little more challenging than usual, but hey that's what I'm doing it for. I just have to pay more attention as it puts me over flap speed and would change the standard routine of "flaps 10...

    HI-VOR approach in a 172?

Hey all, having a brainfart and looking for a sanity check. I fly in and out of KBGR all the time and realized have never requested a VOR approach there. The only ones they have published are the HI-VORs (KBGR is shared with an Air National Guard base). I like practicing new/abnormal...

    Sunglare

Are your sunglasses polarized? You need non-polarized sunglasses to read many avionics displays. They put out polarized light which, if not oriented in the same direction as the polarization in your sunglass lenses, will be blocked out by those lenses. I always carry a pair of non-polarized...

New Here with Medical Cert Questions

I am not a doctor but I don’t foresee the BP med being an issue, you’re allowed to have up to three of those as long as your blood pressure is indeed controlled, which I’m assuming it is. The diabetes med, though, would make me very wary. I’m sure the resident expert AMEs will be along shortly...

    Further instrument difficulties

It sounds like a lot of your problem comes from working yourself up into a tense ball of nerves. I was largely the same way through my instrument training, overthinking and overcriticizing everything I did. Couldn't perform a proper hold to save my life. Getting out from under the hood for a...

    Dumb motorist thread

Oh don't get me wrong, Oki is still the place where cars go to die. The vast majority did just that, bought <$1000 "Oki rentals" and junked them before they PCS'd out(I drove a couple of rustbuckets). But there was still a tuner scene, and I was there in the era when many iconic JDM vehicles...

    Dumb motorist thread

Another good one: Was parting an R32 skyline out, and it naturally turned into an open-house where many of the local tuner community flocked to my driveway. One guy shows up and asks how much I wanted for the starter. After explaining that I didn't want to separate it from the engine, and it...

    Dumb motorist thread

Oooh I like this thread. Here's one for ya. Was once spending some quality time in my usual automotive hobby shop while stationed on Okinawa, doing some work on my car. I was pretty well known as the go-to gearhead in my circles, so someone in my company spotted me and asked for help with a...

    Wake Turbulence - C172 vs 737

Completely agree that it's not a situation to be taken lightly, but I have no problem with the in-the-moment reaction. Yes, they should have extended a bit and landed longer. But once the vortex hit, there's really nothing you can do outside of "yep, that just happened, keep flying the...

    Landing from the right seat

Good information, thanks! I also recently transitioned into a G1000 Skyhawk as well, so I'll certainly keep that in mind.

    Landing from the right seat

Thanks for all the input everyone. Looking forward to getting more experience when I start CFI training. That concept actually came to mind as well. I have lots of experience switching between right- and left-hand drive vehicles, so maybe that's why I felt a lot more comfortable with the...

    Landing from the right seat

Hi all, just thinking out loud a bit and casually wondering about others' opinions/experiences: After a few hundred hours of flying, I recently went up with a friend who is a much newer pilot. This was quite a new experience for me, as not only was I not used to NOT being PIC, it was my first...

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

Wholeheartedly agree with almost everything you said...but you lost me at the manual E6B lol. That godforsaken whizwheel needs to die already. I totally resonate with making your training as practically difficult as possible, but tediously spinning that stupid piece of cardboard for basic...
