Checked off a huuuge bucket list item a few weeks ago...

My copy of X-Plane 11 has one. It's not perfect but still really fun to fly.

    First aviation headset- choice?

Oh, believe me, I'm fully aware. So was I. That's why I saved up for a few weeks while using the loaners, and diverted 2-3hrs of flying money to the "buy once, cry once" fund. I didn't need the $500 flight bag or $300 sunglasses or brand new iPad, etc, but I wanted to be sure I'd be...

Any pireps on the new iPad mini 6 vs the 4?

I'm not sure. My only first-hand point of reference is that mine has only ever overheated once, when it was sitting on top of the glareshield in direct sunlight for a while. Otherwise I haven't had any issues with it. I also only keep mine in that thin folio case and not in an otterbox, etc...

Any pireps on the new iPad mini 6 vs the 4?

I hear you, I'm not a huge fan of Apple myself. Part of me is still chapped that FF isn't/won't ever be compatible with Android, but it is what it is. I've heard good things about this one but no actual real-world reviews. Good to know the battery life is good, thanks! Good to hear, the...

    First aviation headset- choice?

I flew my first few lessons with the standard loaner DCs, they're not terrible but also not great. But they're cheap to buy and cheaper to buy used/broken and have them refurbished. I keep a pair as a backup for the occasional second passenger. After a few lessons, though, I decided to...

Any pireps on the new iPad mini 6 vs the 4?

Hey all, so I ordered a new iPad finally, as my trusty ol' mini 4 is really showing its age lately, in terms of battery life and storage capacity. Needing a constant tether to ship power or battery pack is getting old. Frankly surprised 32GB and wifi-only got me as far as it did for so long...

Flight following - not sure why I didn't use it before

That’s actually awesome lol, the only time I wouldn’t soil my shorts seeing an F-18 on my wing. *starts shoveling sparklers and craft glitter out the window as I bank a whopping 60degrees*

That blue sugar really hits the spot though!

Another post about how awesome it is to be instrument rated..

Glad to see at least a few IR students are getting some encouragement from this. I'd been dying to get instrument rated since before I was even done with PPL. Living in the northeast it was super frustrating to have seemingly every other lesson cancelled due to thin overcast and broken layers...

Checked off a huuuge bucket list item a few weeks ago...

I'll forever be jealous of those who have gotten to see it fly. I still hold out a tiny foolish shred of hope that someday, over the rainbow, they'll get one back in the air for a few demo flights or something. Hell, I'd settle for one hi-def video. I was also stationed on Oki for a few years...

Checked off a huuuge bucket list item a few weeks ago...

My job sent me out to CA for a couple of weeks, so of course I couldn't help but explore in my downtime. Naturally, I looked up the display locations for SR-71s(nothing anywhere near me in the northeast) and came across March Field Air Museum. Man...I've seen all of the videos, read the books...

Another post about how awesome it is to be instrument rated..

.......maybe a litte bit of ego. lol. But it's usually quick to slap ya with a healthy dose of humility if you get carried away.

Another post about how awesome it is to be instrument rated..

Oh, I never intended to say that IR is a silver bullet or that it should be treated as such. Of course there are times when it is either appropriate or inappropriate to fly IFR. I wouldn't file just to be a cool kid in severe clear, nor would I use it to mess around with weather conditions I...

Do wheel pants make a difference?

A couple of knots in cruise. The cherokee doesn't fly near fast enough for them to make any appreciable difference in drag. They're just there for cosmetics and the illusion of aero-slickness. Taking them off for winter isn't a bad idea at all. I can't stand them personally, I think they...

    OSA questions

BasicMed is another option, with a couple of potentially big caveats. 1) I don't know what your flying goals are, but if you want to fly for compensation or hire you'll need at least a 2nd class. 2) BasicMed limits things like how big or fast a plane you can fly, or how many passengers it...

    OSA questions

Per FAR 61.53, you may not act as PIC if you're aware you have a disqualifying condition. OSA is special-issuance territory, meaning it's a disqualifying condition pending the FAA's decision. So if you get diagnosed and put on a CPAP, etc, you'll need to get all the documentation in order and...

GA friendly airports in Newark area

I flew into Lincoln Park N07 in a 172 a few months ago, nice little field with a good restaurant on the ramp. Runway is on the shorter side at 2700', and rather narrow, but should be plenty for a 150. Not very far from Newark. Essex County CDW is a few miles closer but more expensive with...

How often does ATC mis-categorize planes as VFR/IFR?

Yeah, I guess so. I just figured 1) Yes, I actually filed and picked up the clearance on the ground 2 and 3) It was within the same tracon, but it was not a local code, started with a 5 iirc That's what makes me curious. The mixup would make more sense if it was a pop-up that got...

How often does ATC mis-categorize planes as VFR/IFR?

I'm 99% sure I went back to the same freq, since I'd have no reason to dial up anything other than press the flip-flop button when leaving the CTAF. Didn't notice a different voice, but then again most male controllers in my area sound the same to me, lol. It just took me off-guard having just...

Use of simulator for experienced pilot of heavier aircraft

Would it help? Sure. Not much for the flying itself but for the procedural changes. They're great for chair-flying and getting acquainted with where all the controls and gizmos are, especially if you take the time to build a custom sim panel. But I agree that sims don't have much, if any...
