    The Smoke & Fires

Thanks Vince. I had the same experience flying back from Oregon the day of the eclipse in 2017.

    The Smoke & Fires

Murphey, We have plans to stay at Shelter Cove (0Q5) this week, any idea if we flew high enough, 16,000? we could get over the smoke? I guess I'm asking the fire cloud tops. We're flying from Los Angeles. The webcams at Shelter Cove look clear enough. -Craig

New PPL, How to Stay Knowledgable when you can’t fly

Be careful; from AOPA, "An aircraft renter with a distillery-produced sanitizer meant well, but improper disinfecting techniques damaged the instrument panels of two Cessna 172s at Florida’s Atlas Aviation and required costly repairs."...

    Sport Pilot Talk

Hadn't been there in years. I just did and had a similar message, macs allow you to click through and change your settings to allow, don't know what OS you're using. You might consider letting an admin there know the situation so they don't lose all their contributors.

    100 years of Air Mail

Looks like fun, have a great flight. Watch out for the many Fire TFRs popping up in Northern California.

Thoughts about Little River or Ukiah for $500 hamburger?

I hadn't noticed the webcam looking south toward the runway. Thank you.

Thoughts about Little River or Ukiah for $500 hamburger?

The webcams are helpful, but... I flew to Shelter Cove for a few days this week and while the Inn of the Lost Coast (on left of photo) web cam would have shown CAVU, soon after I departed, (downwind) the sky over the runway looked like this:

    Redundancy by hand-held for TAA?

How do you flight plan? How do you transfer that flight planning to your G1000? How do you weather plan for a flight? Do you have any interest in learning to fly IFR? Do you fly in or near any controlled or special use airspace? An iPad could be a great help with any of the above and if you had...

Thoughts about Little River or Ukiah for $500 hamburger?

We always stay at The Tides. Rooms are ok, clean and everything, but the reason to be there is you’re only 50 feet from the surf. Bonus, at least before Covid, was if the weather is bad and you can’t fly in, you can cancel the reservation without penalty. Now they’re leaving rooms fallow for a...

Thoughts about Little River or Ukiah for $500 hamburger?

+1 for Shelter Cove. Currently (during Covid) Gyppo Brew Pub, at south end of field, is quite good, has outdoor seating and take out. Open 3-9 (closed Tuesdays) Mi Mochima is a wonderful Venezuelan place at the North end of the field, outdoor seating and take out, Fri, Sat, Sun 4-8p Mendocino...

    Cost to get CFI

Here in the Los Angeles area there's a flight academy which advertises $65,000 from zero to airline pilot. Their planes are new and well equipped, but I don't know how much teaching you're doing by the end to get your hours. Maybe it's more expensive to just get to CFI?

    DME Arc Procedure in SoCal

Either the ILS or LOC Rwy 17 or VOR/DME at Victorville (VCV) use a DME arc, the closest one to my home base, WHP, in SoCal. Bonus: you get to see the 737 Max 8's as well as hundreds of others grounded there due to Covid-19.

ForeFlight: Finding an airport near a town

Any easy way: 1) Use the maps app on your computer or iPad and find the relevant location. 2) Zoom out until you find an airport. 3) Type in the airport or airport code into ForeFlight. Might be a private airport, as in this case, but you can telephone and ask permission, or try one of the other...

Get whichever iPad meets your size and budget, but absolutely get the Cellular one, even if you don't pay for the plan (which I would argue you should also get, makes the iPad 10x as functional, but you can decide that later.) It's absolutely critical for the iPad to know where it is without...

    Bose X replacement cord?

Call Bose. They replaced some parts for me long after warrantee was over. Yours is truly old, but maybe they'll give you credit toward a new set, can't hurt to ask.

First plane: build hours first vs get your last plane ???

My plane's Landing Gear switch is wired such that it won't retract until 100 kts. That video was painful to watch.

    iPad recommendations

iPad Pro 10.5", (gen 1) for flight planning and bluetoothing flight plans to the plane. When doing IFR training, mounted Mini to window, full-sized iPad was too big for that. Now use mini as backup, but mostly use Garmin screens in plane during flight.

How many hours do you put on a plane.

300+ for the Sling 2, was so inexpensive to fly, mostly over 60nm except working on ratings. Sold last year after 5 yrs. / 1,550 hrs. Only 200+ in the Lancair, actually flew more trips and further, just doesn't need as much time getting there. ~ Been flying much less since March, not sure why. :)

What's the benefit of the 912iS over the 912ULS?

I've owned one plane with a 912iS and one with a 912ULS. Fuel burn for 912iS is 4 gph vs. 5gph for the ULS, on a cross-country that can easily mean an extra fuel stop. ULS is cheaper to purchase but ends up costing more over the life of the engine. ULS requires higher maintenance cost as well as...
