The FAA was right, this time. This ONE time.

"You shouldn’t try to stave off discomfort by taking a pain reliever before getting the shot. The concern is that premedicating with a pain reliever like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), which can prevent side effects like arm soreness as well as fever or headache, might...

TIL: Garmin Pilot w/Garmin InReach For Satellite Messaging

I also have the InReach Mini and use the Earthmate app on the iPhone. You can send preprogrammed messages easily enough from the InReach, (or hit the SOS button if you're in deep...) but for everything else, Earthmate.

Getting transferred to Point Mugu, Ca.

Think of it as a feature. Did my IFR at Camarillo, nice to have some actual in training. Everything McDewey wrote is accurate, I'd add that the best restaurant a short flight (and a walk) away is SY Kitchen at Santa Ynez (IZA.)

    Certified 4seat Rotax Airplane?

Why do you prefer a Certified plane, are you going to teach in it? To me that just means more expense and older avionics. If not, the Sling TSi flies really well. If you like high wing, they're test flying that one now.

How necessary is iPad GPS for ForeFlight?

Jack, have you used an iPad with GPS and cellular on dozens of flights across the country(as well as watch others struggle to get cheap external GPS add ons to work?) If so, I say you're correct, your opinion is equally valid.

How necessary is iPad GPS for ForeFlight?

As others have said, definitely worth $150 extra to have GPS. Replace it now while still in the return window.

    Getting Wife Buy-In on PPL

Says that kid was 6 at the time, which makes her 14 now, could solo a glider! Hope that cub is still in the family.

    Getting Wife Buy-In on PPL

Not single.~~ Yes, my wife enjoys flying and going to interesting places, but of course it's about helping each other find their bliss. Right now that means she's producing a TV show in Australia, I miss her but wouldn't dream of trying to stand in her way. Why would you want to be with someone...

    Getting Wife Buy-In on PPL

Ok, then it's time to get studying, the pandemic has been crap for most things, but I did my commercial and CFI this year. As mentioned earlier, learn the PHAK and Airplane Flying Handbook (both free from the FAA.) I also found "Stick and Rudder" a great help. Then you've got two years after...

    Getting Wife Buy-In on PPL

My wife (GF at the time) encouraged me to get my private, saw some home movies of my brother and me when kids going for a ride in a 172. She said she'd never seen me so happy and I should do it. Didn't change when we got married, except she thought I should get an IR so our traveling by plane...

    Getting Wife Buy-In on PPL

I call BS on this video, there's no way a guy who just bought a new plane would keep it a secret to his friend through an entire dinner.~

    COVID Vaccine (2)

Agree it's amazing there's a vaccine, though hope inoculations ramp up soon. 2 million after two weeks means to vaccinate 330 million will take 330 weeks or over 6 years. (I know there need to be two shots per person, but also not everyone will get the vaccine.)...

What do you use your plane for?

We like to vacation on the Northern California coast, Little River, which is 9 hrs from Los Angeles by car or 2 hrs by plane. Makes going for a weekend realistic. Even though it takes longer than commercial to fly to NY, it's much more enjoyable to fly oneself. But as mentioned earlier, take a...

KHTO might be looking to close?

I flew into HTO last year and thought the airport and people more than accommodating. In fact, although there wasn't an FBO on the field, when I had a mechanical issue, a couple kind gentlemen went far out of their way to help. They lent me tools, advice, a hangar, and even a pickup truck to use...

How long do "these markets" last?

Do people finance personal airplanes? I wouldn't buy one I couldn't afford; insurance, maintenance, and taxes are enough of a yearly expense. It'd be different for a commercial operation where the plane could pay for itself.

    Stupid electric aircraft question

What do you mean by "better fuel gauge requirements than conventional aircraft?" Among other things, 14 CFR Part 23, §23.1337(b) states: "Fuel quantity indicator. There must be a means to indicate to the flightcrew members the quantity of usable fuel in each tank during flight. An indicator...

Rotax 912 TBO has been 2,000 hrs. since 2009.

Be a CFI in my old age?

I agree with your sentiment, and as much as I've made peace with the possibility of an accident when I fly, I'd prefer my wife doesn't lose the house and our investments if the worst should happen. I appreciate your perspective, I may be the opposite though: when I was younger I'd race...

Be a CFI in my old age?

I earned a CFI this year, something I've wanted to do but didn't have the time until the 2020 Covid vacation. A friend asked me this week to do his BFR, but both my financial advisor and my aviation insurance broker talked me out of it, said the only safe way to flight instruct, from a liability...
