    tips for camping

I camped at OSH, Sun N Fun, Johnson Creek, etc. in a Light Sport with backpacking gear. An REI or Big Agnes Tent will fit in your plane and weigh about 3 lbs. Rule of Thumb: get a tent one person larger than the number of people that will actually use the tent. ie, if you're two people, get a 3...

Best way to plug into the local GA community

Depends where you are and how hard you look. At the end of my hangar row a few of the old pilots got together and built a tiki bar. One can stop by any Saturday (again, now that people are vaccinated) to hear all kinds of first-hand stories of flying from the past 70 years, some of them may even...

Going Far VFR: Coast to Coast in a Glasair

EAA or AOPA once put out a kneeboard cheat sheet, what to do when LEO wants to search your plane, does anyone have this or a link?

Cruise Altitude Shortest Flight Time with Best Economy

Justin, I have useful EGT indicators, but the mixture always ends up just rich of stumble, so I don't think you're missing much there unless cylinders are out of balance. Assuming winds aloft have no impact (which is a pretty big assumption) higher is more efficient (time and fuel) in my...

No problem, OP will just have to schedule another cross country flight.

    Fuel efficiency of airplanes

Except you have it backwards, Experimentals have all the added safety features years/decades before they're certified by the FAA. I can't tell you how many times I cringe when I hear Max Trescott (Aviation News Talk) brag about the incredible new safety features of the certified planes he flies...

Your point? edit to add: What does FAA certification have to do with efficiency?

A Lancair can do 30mpg at over 200mph(no wind,) are many cars that efficient at that speed?

    AOPA ASI Turnback Video

I'm sure I'm missing something; if the A36 was able to complete 360 degs. of turn within 1,000' at altitude, why was it unable to do so near the surface? I could see if the radius was so large, he'd fly downwind past the approach end, but this didn't seem to be the case. The video shows him...

What if the pilot goes unconscious? my wife took a pinch hitter course...

Jason understands the psychology of flight instruction, I flew with him in a Cirrus out of San Carlos years ago, he was the same. I love how he sent a copy of Stick and Rudder, best thing I ever gave my wife. It'd be hard to argue with the fact that Poppins has a much better chance of getting...

    Thinking of going Sport Pilot

Had a Sling LSA for 5 yrs and 1,500 hrs., landed in all the lower 48 states. Could get from Los Angeles to New York with just two stops, flight planned for 115kts at <4 gph mogas. Then sold it back to dealer for more than I payed for it (for use in their flight academy.) Started flying it with...

    Truth or Consequences (KTCS) History

True, though a similar stunt happened in 1999: "Halfway is a city in Baker County, Oregon, United States. The city took its name from the location of its post office, on the Alexander Stalker ranch, halfway between Pine and Jim Town. The population was 288 at the 2010 census. During the...

    Truth or Consequences (KTCS) History

"Truth or Consequences, locally called T or C and formerly known as Hot Springs, is a town in New Mexico in the United States of America. It gets its curious name from a 1950s-vintage television show that offered to film an episode in some little town far from Hollywood, if that town would...

Anyone Other Than Rainbow Aviation offering the LSR-M Course?

Mark, Consider Flying into Lee Summit and sharing a rental car with some of the other students and save some money. Also, at least in Corning, Rainbow had a great deal with the local motel for well under half the regular rate. -Craig

Anyone Other Than Rainbow Aviation offering the LSR-M Course?

Jim, Not wishing to start an internet spat, but what can an A&P/IA do either actually or legally that an LSRM-A can’t do on an LSA? I see you fly Experimental Light Sports, did you take the 16 hr. course and get the LSRI-A certificate (instead of the 120 hr LSRM-A?) I’m not taking anything away...

Anyone Other Than Rainbow Aviation offering the LSR-M Course?

They were in Corning California, but yes, Rainbow has moved. A 15 day course (3 weeks when I did it) and you become an A&P/IA for Light Sport aircraft, definitely worth getting out to Missouri for your vacation.

    AOA vs Stall Horn

An AOA can push the stick forward, (on Garmin G3X, at least) and keep you from getting slow if you're saturated. Just have to turn this off if you're practicing stalls.

who has right of way, backtaxi vs landing aircraft?

Interesting article on right-of-way https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2008/november/flight-training-magazine/who-has-the-right-of-way Pertinent paragraph: "(g) Landing. An aircraft landing, or on final approach to land, has priority over all other aircraft in flight, or on the...

Central CA to Sedona in a Light Sport A/C

I flew a light sport to all the lower 48 states and landed Sedona many times. Don't miss the excellent restaurant there, Mesa Grill, which has lots of outdoor seating and appears to be open. KSEZ is beautiful and not too challenging, just watch for other planes including jets. The runway is more...
