A humble suggestion: It takes a long time to get good at aerial photography. Formation Flying, Weather, Light, Time of Day, Clouds, Cameras, Lenses, etc. You could start slowly and SAFELY practice your craft while being strict about taking absolutely no money for practice shoots. Meanwhile...

+1. I bought a pre-built one because my new plane didn't have ADS-B and I never want to fly without at least ADS-B in here in Los Angeles. Just upgraded my panel w/ dual AHRS and ADS-B, PM me if you'd like to buy the Stratux for whatever it's worth to you. Used 3 months, works perfectly.

This. I've only had my IFR ticket 6 months, so correct me if I'm wrong; regardless of the choices that got you there, if you're critical on fuel, can't you declare an emergency and land below minimums? I assume an airline would pilot hesitate to declare for fear of jeopardizing his job?

I went through this last fall and ended up with the iPad Mini 4 (128g + cellular) and haven't had any issues with speed or updates. It also runs Stratux info on ForeFlight no problem. I found I couldn't read approach plates on the phone. If your eyes are better than mine or you don't fly IFR, YMMV.

So, the bad news is the new iPad Mini has the same size bezels. The good news is Apple updated rather than discontinued the Mini. I'd say I wish I hadn't bought the last version so recently, but it was super helpful during IFR training.
