Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

Um... what exactly am I supposed to do if I see on flightradar24 they're a couple miles left or right of course or if they're on a right downwind instead of a left? Do I send them a smoke signal or...? How do you think that an instructor in that spot can fix anything from the home airport...

Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

How did you know what game I play on my work phone? Are you spying on me?

Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

    1. Debrief can be done via phone, or at the next lesson. 2. I don't know what kind of issues I could squash from my desk vs. my home once they're away from base. 3. Position reports? I legitimately don't understand this one... are you recommending CFIs listen to maybe 123.45 and make students...

Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

    1. No 2. Yes. I never said I didn't brief them or answer questions. But sheesh by the time they're on a solo XC they've got 3-5 unsupervised solos already and 2 supervised solos. Having some skin in the game is exactly what students need.. knowing that I'm not always going to be there to hold...

Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

At some point you have to let the students learn on their own. That is the point of the 10 hours of solo time, to learn before they have passengers. If I have a student out on a solo XC or even on a regular solo I will always answer my phone, regardless of if I'm at the airport or not. I have...

Strike 2 for AOPA on ramp fees.

If you want assurance that when your lease is up, don't get into the FBO business. That's my argument. Just because I've never seen an FBO's building get turned into city property doesn't mean it can't happen at lease expiration. Airport leases are complicated. I encourage you to go to your...

Strike 2 for AOPA on ramp fees.

It's more common than you think, and although I've never seen it happen it's always a possibility. If the City doesn't renew the lease then the company has to either 1. Move the buildings or 2. sell them without a lease attached. Either option loses a lot of $$$ once that lease is up.

Strike 2 for AOPA on ramp fees.

There is a lot more behind the scenes than just "Signature/Atlantic/Millionair making deals with the City". More like the City is begging someone to come in, put a huge investment in the airport and meet airport minimum standards that are required by the FAA. And after their lease is up, the...

When Will I Solo (asked many times I'm sure)

I expect my students to fly safely and have a well-rounded understanding of the basics. They have to have good decision making skills and good judgement too, which is the difficult part for many. No, it's your responsibility to register with IACRA and fill out the 8710. It is the CFIs...

    Used Twin Price

If you're looking for a "good deal" a piston twin is not the answer. Yeah, the airframe is relatively inexpensive but it is not efficient in either fuel or maintenance. If the twin fits your wants/needs/mission then still get it, just be aware that regardless of purchase price it could be...

If it's broken may as well upgrade - A 310R upgrade story

Thanks! I was down a little over a month butt a lot of it was my fault.. We added a few things at the last minute before the install so it took some time to get those things in (Stratus charger, Garmin FlightStream) and then it was discovered we really needed a new ELT. If you can get your crap...

Trig functions & Private Pilot Test

Testing center proctor/supervisor here... in our procedures manual it specifically states that only a "basic four function with no memory storage" is allowed. We provide them but an applicant can bring their own I just have to press clear. An electronic E6B is allowed but again I have to clear...

If it's broken may as well upgrade - A 310R upgrade story

It has been in the air a few times now. Had to have the avionics shop fix a couple minor things but it was flyable. The first flight discovered a couple minor issues with the engine monitor and more importantly an actual issue with the right engine. Turns out for the last year the right engine...

    Best FBO at KSAF?

i have had very good experience with the Signature there. Not every Signature/Atlantic/MillionAir is bad, in fact most of them are good as long as you buy some fuel.

    Hangars near KCHD Chandler, AZ

At CHD you almost have to know someone that knows someone. Chandler Air Service owns a couple T's down the ramp but I would be surprised if they're available. FFZ is probably your best bet to be honest.

    Got my CFI today

They're not necessary. My CFI ride was done before lunch and that included a pause for a snack and waiting for fog to lift. DPEs seem to be harder than FSDO these days, too. Congrats! Now the real learning begins. Just wait until you have your first "difficult" student.

If it's broken may as well upgrade - A 310R upgrade story

It will really help. But prior to total failure it will show signs that something isn't right on a particular cylinder and allow more time to troubleshoot/divert before totally losing one. And knowing it's a certain engine will help to mentally prepare for identify/verify/feather/secure and...

If it's broken may as well upgrade - A 310R upgrade story

I took her for her maiden voyage yesterday. There are a few bugs to work out, and I forgot to take a picture in flight. But here is is afterwards. I sure missed flying her :)

    AME process time

Unbelievable. Wow. I have one student who has been waiting for an SI. He was told back in January/February it would be a month. He calls once or twice a week and still nothing. The guy is getting so fed up with the process he is considering giving up flying all together. AME said it should...

    CFI training has begun!

It will get easier. In less than 10 hours you will be as proficient in the right seat as you are in the left. You have to stop thinking "I'm flying from the wrong seat!" and start thinking "I'm just flying an airplane". Once you get comfortable flying the maneuvers then you'll get to teach...
