    What're those round dials for?

I have those in a couple planes I fly. i use them as a landing counter for touch and gos with students.

    What twin do I want?

I do not think I would choose a 310 for that airport with that mission. We base out of a 3,900ft Airpark (3,500 for landing) and that is short enough for me, especially during the summer. Putting even 4 people and fuel in it would be sporty taking off on 3,900, let alone 2,700. Lose an engine...

iPad Mini death watch, 9/12/2018 edition

For the price of the Max you can buy a Macbook (maybe even a Macbook Pro). Anyone tried mounting one and running the web based Foreflight? (I kid, I kid)

    Time to Sell

This. 100% - I followed my friend and coworker who was dropping off an airplane he just sold about 300 miles away. Relatively easy flight, but it was IFR and we were both in the clouds a good portion of the time. The engine quit on his airplane in IMC. He made it to some awful airport in...

Why should I not buy a Cessna 421.??

It's really frustrating and frankly it's sad. The kid who flies for them (and I do mean kid) wanted twin time and that's how he sold it. The kid didn't even have a multi rating when they bought it! They had to send him to get it. I offered to pilot service it but they didn't like the price I...

Why should I not buy a Cessna 421.??

Thanks. I only ask because a former client of mine just sold their 210 for a 340. Average trip is 150 miles which seems pretty dumb. They told me they have no idea what their operating costs would be, but their pilot said they needed a twin to increase dispatch rate. They got screwed. Good to...

Why should I not buy a Cessna 421.??

How would you compare this to a 340? Slightly off topic but.. how did you find the transition from 310 to 425? What did your insurance company require? Looking to jump into the Conquest world in 3-5 years. It's easier to find operating/maintenance costs than it is to find training/insurance costs.

    Time to Sell

You won't make your money back on a twin, but you'll certainly enjoy it while you own it. It is annoying that due to the relatively small number produced (310/310R) some STCs are slow to get. Come on, I just want to give you all my money and you're holding this STC hostage. I'm looking at you...

    Not allowed to cancel?

The best and easiest option IMO would have been special VFR. Unless there was a buttload of traffic then he may have incurred a delay for requesting a special. Special VFR is often forgotten but it is a great tool when the weather is below IFR minimums but not bad enough to need to fly an approach.

    My shirt was cut

Solo flights are a good time to practice maneuvers and keep current on them while you're entering the cross country phase. That being said, the biggest benefit of solo flight is confidence building and decision making. That's stuff you can't train for, students learn that on their own.

Are checkrides longer than they used to be?

My students typically experience a 3-4 hour oral (there are a couple of breaks in there) and 1.3-1.6 on the flight. That being said the examiner I use lets the applicant take their time, look up whatever they need etc. His commercial and instrument checkrides are 2 hour orals or less. He says...

How to use the self-serve fuel pumps at the airport!

Fuel not being sumped regularly, fuel not received/used/turned regularly, filters not being changed, tanks not being inspected or cleaned regularly. Yeah, a lot of self serves are used regularly and maintained well. The busier the airport the more likely the chances for a well cared for...

    Hotels

Unless we're going to a destination for a specific reason (Reno, San Diego, Vegas) I just have the FBO do it. They get rates and usually have complimentary transportation to/from. Still get points too. The FBO also knows who takes care of customers and who is just average.

Cessna 414 down near John Wayne - 5 Dead

The thought of training engine out procedures, Vmc demos, single engine approaches and landings is significantly more scary than the rating itself. It's still an airplane and you will revert to the basics of "fly the airplane". The thought of losing an engine on takeoff is scary, and that's...

    Cessna/Textron commitment to small GA.

One of my very favorite flight instructors told me a story from an aircraft dealership in the 1970s (yeah, old story that isn't mine...) The guy would sell a whole bunch of singles, then three to five years later sell a whole bunch of high performance singles, then three to five years later a...

Cessna 414 down near John Wayne - 5 Dead

Thanks just in the mains. It probably had aux tanks too. Either way the mains would have been plenty of fuel for that flight.

    Cessna/Textron commitment to small GA.

And since this thread is showcasing booths at Oshkosh, it was very noticeable how busy the Garmin tent was. I also went to the Honeywell tent (where I can get a significant discount on already cheaper products) and it was a ghost town. Garmin is keeping up with the times and producing products...

    Oshkosh - 2018

We got an Air B&B. We had a group of 8 share a 5 bedroom house (2 couples, 4 singlet) and overall cost was $360/room for three days, way cheaper than hotels. Five minutes from the main gate. Definitely going that route next time we go too. Having a kitchen and a place to hang out, shower, drink...

    Oshkosh - 2018

Got into Appleton as planned. What wasn't planned was the approach down to 700 feet. Glad I got that IFR slot "just in case"

    Tales of a Rusty Pilot

You will be just fine :) I think you are under estimating yourself and your abilities. It will get easier with every flight and my guess is you will be signed off before you think. I don't see any deficiencies from your CFI. He took flight one as an abilities assessment and can now take that...
